Change in Career?

Only 22 and just graduated with a BS in MIS. Been working in the IT field for four years now, and I'm getting pretty bored. Maybe it has to do with my current position (network administrator), but I find my work pretty redundant nowadays. I've been intrigued by the medical field since I was in HS, but computers became my niche in my senior year leading up until college.

I've been researching schools in my area that has some sort of Master programs in medical professions. I found a program at Arcadia University in Forensic Science. Now that's pretty cool and I bet I could use my IT skills in that field. I really hate to spend another 5 years to become a doctor, and I'm not sure if I want to put all that time and effort. Another two-three years isn't so bad.

I've heard of ppl changing careers in their late 30's and 40s, but I'm just starting out. I'm really confused and it doesn't help that the IT market is really dried up!!! I have so many connections in the medical field (I spent three years doing IT stuff for a medical laboratory), but hardly any in the IT field.

I feel like I'm reading a post about me... But I'm doing Systems Administration for a university and it's far from monotonous. We're doing a full Netware 6 implementation and replacing our Email systems. It's the busiest I've ever been in a job in my life. It's pretty awesome. You might just want to find a new job and stick with the same field.

a lot of us IT students in college envy that you were even able to get a network admin job, which is for us the dream job, as you reallly do jack sh!t.

Totally agree that I'm pretty lucky in having this job. The job is pretty cool when you're busy doing stuff. I still need to put up an intranet server and figure out why my sendmail server is acting funny. But, it gets pretty boring "locked up" in the basement with no social contact. the only contact I have is only when ppl call for support issues. besides that im in my room 5-6 hours a day.

Exactly. Trust me. I worked Help Desk for 2 years before I was able to land my job. I'm also 22. I wouldn't drop this for the world because of the benefits and freedom. Administrative jobs are definitely the way to go as long as you can perform well on your own and continue to do active development work.

Doesn't help that my so-called boss is an idiot who can't do a damn thing. Kinda hard to be responsible for 7 servers and not no where to turn for answers when you desperately seek them. Google IT my friend!!!

Anyways ... the only good thing about this job is that I can do whatever I want. If I decide to pursue a Master degree then I can easily study while I'm at work!
