Change Hdd on IBM 755CE

I have a IBM Thinkpad 755CE with an 810 meg hard drive, not sure of what connection type this is. I also have found a Toshiba 4.3 Gig 2.5 inch hard drive (much smaller than the other) with the 44 pin connector. Does anyone know how I could replace one of these with the other (is there an adapter cable?)?

Secondly, what is this connection type that the harddrive connects to the IBM with?

Lastly, what is the proper name for the 44 pin connection type on the notebook hard drive? Thanks.

Hi, I replaced the 1 gig drive in my TP 755 with a 2.2 gig drive. Maybe the following will help you. Inside the funny looking IBM lump that they call a HD is a normal everyday Laptop Hd. I took mine apart and put the 2.2 gig drive into it. Had to clip some plastic pins out that fit into the side mounting holes of the drive because the new one had the holes in a different place. Incidently you must have a drive the same height or smaller than the old one or it wont fit. It is much easier to get an IBM drive with the funny housing. Anyway, before I disabled the old drive I backed it up to another maching over my LAN. Replaced the drive with the new one, loaded Win98, Backup and the LAN and restored it. All was well. Good luck, Jim

Hi, I had go go get the 755. There are two different setups. The old one opens differently. For the one in the 755 you have to remove the two screws at the connector end that hold the connector. From that point the top swings up and the sides drop down. Watch carefully so you will know how the removal bail hooks up. From there you check the new drive to see if the little plastic pins on the sides line up. Remove them if they don't. Unplug the connector adaptor and reassemble the whole mess. You should be in business. No BIOS to setup. Just boot from the 98 startup disk and load up. If you want to load another OS you will need more help. Luck, Jim

Thanks by the way. I got it open, but I broke a pin off. Plus it was a bit messy cause I was using a screwdriver (plus I was using a bit of brute force and ignorance).

Hi, Sorry for your failure. I guess I was just lucky. I've gotten away with it with both versions of the HD holder (lump). If the pin was on the adaptor you should be able to find an used drive of very small capacity cheap to get a new adaptor and holder. Luck, Jim
