change from the right lane when cops got someone pulled over ?

Is it some kinda unwritten rule/law ? It's one of the most dangerous things for them to be on the side of a highway with cars going 55mph+ buzzing by them as they stand outside their vehicle. Even if they don't get clipped, their vehicles can and it's just as bad cause they're usually standing in front. So are we supposed to move out of the right lane to give them more space ? Or are people afraid of random gunfire erupting so they move over ?

While I'm not aware of it being law in Oregon it may be in some areas. Regardless it's common decency for your safety as well as the cop's.

Give them space, let them do their jobs.

I do when I can. When I CAN'T get over, I just slow down and try to move as far to the left of the right lane as I can without hitting the car beside me. Most of the times, the other car knows what I'm doing.

 

Just common practice. Do it so you dont endanger more lives. If you cant do it, take NFS4 suggestion.

It's not unwritten in many places, it IS law. You either have to move over a lane or slow down. THere have been too many people getting clipped while on the side of the road that they made it law in lots of places.

But even if it's not, it's common courtesy to do that for anyone pulled over. Would you want to be out there changing a flat tire with cars flying by at 75mph 3 feet away from you? I know I wouldn't.

 

I get over when i can, i dont want an episode of real tv to show me getting close to hitting a cop.

This has to be one of the dumbest things a person can do... get out of your car and fix a tire with cars flying by. I wouldn't consider doing it on a local road with little shoulder space, let alone a highway. Either risk a damaged rim and get your car off at the next exit or call for a tow truck. Risking your life like that is just plain unnecessary.

On a semi-related note... we were headed to DC on the NJ Turnpike when my bro's Civic (I was driving) suddenly felt like it needed to do one of it's famous let's-drop-the-muffler-pipe-because-of-rust-damage routines (had this happen to 3 Hondas already). So we're pulled over on the LEFT shoulder cause there wasn't any time to get over 3 lanes decelerating from 75mph. It was dragging pretty loudly. Thankfully we had a cellphone to call 911 for a tow truck. The shoulder in the left lane is so tight, you'd get hit opening the door on the right side. There's hardly enough room to open the left side door. Let me tell you - it was quite the experience walking up to his tow truck when he asked us to get in...

Law or not, move over if you can.

Slowing down: on busy crowded highways all it takes is a couple of people to slow down and you get a major traffic jam (rubbernecking). You have take into account how fast you can go by safely. Obviously you don't want to do anything dangerous, but slowing to a crawl isn't cool either.

This is one reason New Jersey drivers are so used to zipping from lane to lane.

About a year back I remember driving by in the city and seeing ambulances around this car. Just so happens this guy was changing his tire in the right lane of a busy street and got clipped and died instantly. He could've turned right into a parking lot no more than 30 feet up and be completely out of harm. As far as I know they didn't find the driver(HIT and RUN). Poor guy.

I'm not sure if it's a law here in Florida(could very well be) but I always try to move over if I see a car on the right.

it is a law in michigan. I believe the punishment is up to life in prison for hitting a cop because you did not move over a lane.

In Michigan, you must observe emergency and/or law enforcement vehicles on the side of the road. You either have to change to another lane or slow to a speed not to exceed 20 mph less than the posted speed limit.

A drunk driver killed about 6 people here locally. Most of them had stopped to help a disabled vehicle when the van plowed into them. I hope he fries.

Its a law in WI to move over, if at all possible, for emergency and law enforcement vehicles. Effective 1-01-03. I got a warning on 1-03-03. :rolleyes; He let me off, because I had slowed down, and it would have almost impossible for me to get over.

if it takes you that long to figure out if its safe to get to a farther lane or reduce speed to 20mph less the the posted speed then you shouldn't be driving.


now what if the posted speed is 15! heh you put it in reverse and go 5mph? heheh

I have no idea if it's a law or not in my state but typically I will move to the other lane or at least give them a wider berth in my own lane which I did this morning when highway patrol had some dude pulled over.

Also in Indiana (& I think Ohio as well). Don't know what the penalty is.
