change from slave to master harddrive

A long time ago, I had western digital 40 gb as a master so I added the second w.d. 80gb as a slave and was trying to copy to copy as if transfer all data into second hd . Then pulled both out. I bought the removable mobile media h.d tray and installed in tower so that way I can switch each hd. I purcahsed another w.d 80 gb so the total is three h.d. so far. I just want one all harddrive into master so that way I can download some stuff and use the 40 as a back up in case it's screwed up.

Now. I m trying to use the second hd. that was instaslled as slave. I switced to master and it won't boot into win xp at all. It looks like it's booting but after xp loads, then goes black blank.... I decided to give it another try by switching from master to cable direct jumper. It still wont work... It looks like that it must be salve and run by other h.d master.

The problem is that I can't run itself. I do not want to lose all those data on second hd that I thought i copied/transfer into. I already have done clean instasllaion on another 80 gb to run boring program for now. I do not want to do all over agian. The second drive has all data that I do not want to lose at all....

Was having a hell of time to figure what went wrong. I only want the second hd to run itself as if it's running single hd instead depend on second one.

Any suggestion would be appreicated........

I forgot to add few things that u should know: the first harddrive runs on window xp home edition ( which is already formatted as a back up) . The second drive is supposed to run on window xp home edition. The third drive runs on window xp professional.

Right now I m running on the 3rd harddrive and it runs beautifully. I m trying to resteore the second drive also...

Sorry if it sounds confusion. Hopefully, you guys can help me out thanks....

You are not kidding with the confusion statement.
How did you copy data from master to slave?

You are NEVER supposed to start from the second drive WITHOUT removing the first drive. If you do so, your copy will be renbdered useless....... the reason is that XP/2000 mount the partitions everytime they start. If a partition is mounted and then ity doesn't exist the system halts or stars rebooting.

Do the copy again, and remove the 40GB drive before any attempt to start from the 80GB. If you already have data on the 80GB drive (second disk) then it becomes more complicated. You can make a Norton Ghost image of the 80GB drive. It MUST be "partition to image" and you should use the switch -fdsz to clear the signature bytes. Try restoring this image, and you should be able to boot and run, but maybe a few nice messages of missing pagefile.sys will appear.

Good luck

Alex
