Change fan in Power Supply...

MrChipMuthabored

I am hearing a quick rattling noise I think maybe coming from my power supply. Is it safe to open up the power supply unit and inspect and change the fan? What precautions should I take?

Thanks.

It is no problem to change the fan in the PS. The only thing is that you will have to cut and solder the wires together as the fan in the PS is hardwired into the supply. A fan will cost you about $8.00 or so. unplug the supply before taking it out of the case.

One quick thing...

Hmm, I didn't know the PS's fan was soldered in there....Maybe I should just get another PS.

And when you hear a rattling sound, it IS the fan, right? I couldn't think of anything else it could be. I've got like a total of 9 fans running in my case and I really can't pinpoint it to one. But my suspicions lie with the power supply fan. Hmm...

Thanks

The fan is the only thing in a powersupply that moves so that is probably the source of your rattle.

Some powersupplies have the fan hardwired, others don't. (2-pin connector on many of them)

if your opening your power supply be very careful as the capacitors can hold alot of power and give you quite a jolt if your not careful... commonly powersupplys arent meant to be messed with

There is NO danger in opening your power supply if you unplug it from the 110 volts. The capacitors may have a lot of capacity but have a bleeder resistor across them not only to equalize the voltage but to take the charge off when there is no voltage input. There are only 2 wires on the fan. In my opinion anyone can hook 2 wires together. Never be afraid to try something or you will never have any confidence in your abilities.
