Change Default view of dialogue window

Whenever I open, save or attach a file, the dialogue box that comes up is usually in the LIST view. (Different views are Thumbnail, Tile, List, Icon Detail)

Is there a way to change this so this it opens up in DETAIL view (and then displaying the list by most recenty updated at the top)?

if it matters, this is in Windows XP and opening/saving/attaching in Word/Excel, Outlook, etc...

thanks for any help on this...
