Change avi to mpeg for windows XP

I have windows xp and was wondering if there is any way to change a avi file to an mpeg file ( Windows XP won't play avi files ) So if there is any way to convert the two I would like to know. Thanx

XP should play avi's. You can use the built in Movie Maker to convert to wma. There is plenty of free stuff at vcdhelper that can do what you want.

I agree with LarryJoe, WinXP can play AVIs .If Windows Media Player 8 doesn?t do the trick, use 6.4 that can be found on ?Program Files\Windows Media Player\?, file ?mplayer2.exe?.

It's not Windows XP fault, you are probably just missing some codecs, however WM 8.0 doesn't show you error then it can't find video codec, instead it plays visualisation (nice idea ;)).
Try to view avi file properties or just install several most popular (divx 3, 4.11, krystal etc.).

Actually thats exactly whats wrong it says it can't find codecs. Weird. Thanx for the replys.
