To say that Microsoft has had problems getting Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games on to its game consoles would be an understatement. Super-hero based Champions Online now looks to be the latest in a string of MMO titles that seemingly can't make their way on to the Xbox 360 after a post from a Cryptic Studios team member on the game's official forums states that the Xbox 360 version isn't in the plans.
To date, the only MMO game to successfully make its way to an Xbox console is Final Fantasy XI. No definitive reason has been given on why MMOs for Xbox consoles have problems getting off the ground but the speculation has ranged from the way Live is setup to Microsoft being inflexible with subscription plans. Or, it could just be an example of how difficult MMO titles can be to develop and splitting attention to multiple platforms may be out of some developer's grasp.
Conversely, the PS3 may benefit from Sony Online Entertainment's years of developing and running MMO titles as there are a number of MMO games for the PS3 scheduled. Some of the games include paid-subscription DC Universe Online and Final Fantasy XIV and micro-transaction based Free Realms. It should be noted that Final Fantasy XIV is rumored to come to the Xbox 360 too.
100% of our focus is on making the current PC product the best it can be. There are no current plans for a console version of Champions.
Ironically, Champions Online was actually supposed to be a replacement for the canceled Marvel Universe Online after development problems kept it from even getting off the ground. Other MMORPGs that were canceled include True Fantasy Online (original Xbox) and a Halo MMO. Age of Conan has been out on the PC for almost two years now but the promised Xbox 360 version is no where in sight. Huxley, a MMO FPS, has still yet to be released for the PC after being announced a couple of years ago and the Xbox 360 version is on hold indefinitely.
