Champions Online now a no-go for the Xbox 360

To say that Microsoft has had problems getting Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games on to its game consoles would be an understatement. Super-hero based Champions Online now looks to be the latest in a string of MMO titles that seemingly can't make their way on to the Xbox 360 after a post from a Cryptic Studios team member on the game's official forums states that the Xbox 360 version isn't in the plans.
100% of our focus is on making the current PC product the best it can be. There are no current plans for a console version of Champions.
Ironically, Champions Online was actually supposed to be a replacement for the canceled Marvel Universe Online after development problems kept it from even getting off the ground. Other MMORPGs that were canceled include True Fantasy Online (original Xbox) and a Halo MMO. Age of Conan has been out on the PC for almost two years now but the promised Xbox 360 version is no where in sight. Huxley, a MMO FPS, has still yet to be released for the PC after being announced a couple of years ago and the Xbox 360 version is on hold indefinitely.

To date, the only MMO game to successfully make its way to an Xbox console is Final Fantasy XI. No definitive reason has been given on why MMOs for Xbox consoles have problems getting off the ground but the speculation has ranged from the way Live is setup to Microsoft being inflexible with subscription plans. Or, it could just be an example of how difficult MMO titles can be to develop and splitting attention to multiple platforms may be out of some developer's grasp.

Conversely, the PS3 may benefit from Sony Online Entertainment's years of developing and running MMO titles as there are a number of MMO games for the PS3 scheduled. Some of the games include paid-subscription DC Universe Online and Final Fantasy XIV and micro-transaction based Free Realms. It should be noted that Final Fantasy XIV is rumored to come to the Xbox 360 too.

The bolded statement is not true. Phantasy Star Universe (sequel to Phantasy Star Online) has been on the Xbox 360 for quite some time. In fact, it is the most popular platform for the game, as Sonic Team announced it is shutting down the PS2/PC servers in favor of only supported the Xbox 360.

I've never really thought of PSU as a MMO. It's more like an online co-op RPG than a MMO IMHO FWIW AFAIK.

If they could get MMOs on consoles I worry that it'd be a nail in the coffin for PC games...I for one hope that doens't happen (although I would like console MMOs).

PSU is more like an MMO than an RPG. You do missions with a party, as well as trade with other players. There is almost no story involved and it is just a grind "Random Mission S" until you get that super rare item plans , then you attempt to make it, then you attempt to upgrade it to the max. All of which, have little success rates.

That aside, a console MMO wouldn't work nearly as well as PC. The lack of keyboard and true macro support limits the game to a few buttons and the UI.

Yeah, but its missing the first M...Massively.

Not really. The lobbies are usually full of people, and the party missions are limited to 6. Guild Wars was considered an MMO and it did something similar.

need to find that article in pcgamer that talked about them trying to do console and pc fps, said guys on console owned so hard by pc they had to can it. same can be said about most mmo prospects unless they really neuter the pc version.
