Challenging Compaq/Win XP Home question

I have an older Compaq Presario 6300us that was having software issues. I backed up all the files and initated the Compaq system recover. After Disc 1 was finished, found the CD drive had decided to break, but not before severly scratching the CD. I installed a new DVD burner, but since it was in the middle of the recovery process when powered down, I can't get it running. The Disc 1 won't read, and it won't let me boot off the floppy a: drive with Windows XP Home set-up floppies that I copied from MS website. I have gone so far as to take all cables off the back of all cd drives so the BIOS only sees the hard drive and the floppy a: drive, but I can't get it to boot. It will only look at the drive and then put up the "HIT A KEY TO REBOOT" message, which just loops back to this message whenever you hit a key. The only CD that the computer is willing to try and read is Compaq System Recovery Disc 1, the one that is all scratched. I tried to burn a copy, but it's hosed. What do I need to do to get this thing going again? I have tried using other discs that I used to upgrade to XP home on a different computer, but it won't recognize them either. Is this a hardware problem? Help!

No, since you replaced the bad DVD drive, I doubt that there is any hardware problem involved. I would believe that you need to get a replacement CD for the damaged one, so that the original recovery can be completed. Have you tried contacting Compaq about this?
