Challenge: How to get pine branch to stand up and look like a Tree?

I didn't put up a Christmas tree this year because we were supposed to go away, but plans changed.

We're financially-challenged this year, so I thought I'd just get some pine from the yard and decorate with a few lights, etc. It's just something to put the gifts under.

I have the branch, it's nicely shaped, about 3-4 feet tall, not too heavy, but I can't get it to stand up. I put it in a vase, but it's too big for that - it falls over unless propped up against the wall.

I KNOW that if I had a stand, it would work fine, but surely the ATOT community can help me get my christmas tree to look like a christmas tree using common ordinary household objects.

Suggestions?

I would take some 2x4's and put them in a crossing pattern. Then removed part of the 2x4's where the "tree" will sit in it and nail the tree into the 2x4 stand.
