Challenge from my dad: ripping dvd movies and making backups...

I've just been backing up family movies, though. If youre trying to burn commercial DVD's, there may be some sort of copy protection. Dunno what to do about that.

Note to all the would be flamers: I'm not trying to warez DVD movies or anything. I just want to help my dad figure this out, I'll probably be making a copy of Farscape DVDs my brother owns. I'll take pics to prove flamers.

it depends if theyre double density. Most dvds are 9.4 GBs so you cant put them on a single dvd without cuttin crap out. I know spaceballs the movie is a 4.7gb disc so you can just rip that and straight burn it with no problem.

BTW, you will NOT want to encode to DIVX first. The quality of the final product would look horrible. Also, there are software packages out there like DVDXCOPY and some others that will do everything you need to back up your DVD's to DVDR's.

Use dvdshrink, its free and great. Burn the output with nero. You'll have a copy in 40 minutes tops.

Please go get the program and try it 😉 The easiest is to just let it compress the video, but you can also drop features if you'd prefer to not compress.

DVDShrink + Nero 6 or TMPGEnc DVD Author

I use dvd decryptor first, then dvd shrink, then dvd image tool classic to make my back ups. all freeware! It does a great job of getting rid of the extras and compressing the movie. Good luck. LsuFan
