Im trying to find a great budget card for my GF's system so we can play BF2 together. Right now she has an ATI 9600 non-pro (fanless). Im trying to find something within the $100-$140 price range. I saw some 7800's a while ago when I was checking, but now I cant seem to locate one for that price. I dont care what the retailer is, as long as it is reputable. Any suggestions and/or links are welcome!

thanks in advance!

Welcome back Nick ...
--i feel we are up to your challenge :)

i guess you are looking for AGP ... what CPU does she have and what is the rest of her system? Just for BF2 or are you also looking to play DX10 games also? [edit: we have to see 2600 or 2900 series in AGP for that]

Also what resolution is her LCD?

i have been recommending the x1950p/xt as decent bang-for-buck AGP cards and had a pro till i upgraded to my current PCIe rig. .. x1950p might be just a little out of your price range brand new.

XFX Nvidia 7600GT 256MB AGP

This is my pick. $109 after rebate for a 7600GT is awesome. It's as fast as a 7800GS AGP card you were looking for at a much better price. These also consume less power than the ATI 1900 series cards (and i'm a little biased to nvidia's drivers).

Just got one for my brother's pc, runs great.

Yeah, AGP, should have mentioned that. She has an AMD64 3000 with 1gb of RAM. Not sure about dx10, but we enjoy gaming together. We played a lot of Starcraft, then WoW, some Diablo II, now BF2. We will probably play starcraft 2 when that arrives. Her LCD screen is a 19" Samsung screen, and I think she runs it in the standard 1024x768. I am not a fanboy either, ATI or Nvidia both work for me.

I just stumbled across this. Decent price and a nice rebate. thoughts?

**Edit**

Her PSU is the antec truepower 330 IIRC. Whatever comes with the Sonata II.

Nick, the 7600GT i linked and the 7800GS you linked are both fine choices. You can't go wrong with either of them.

ouch! ... 480w for the x1950p ... i'd also agree with 7600GT/7800GS

yep .. that is a nice card .. you might be able to find it cheaper.

It looks like the 7600 GT would be the better deal. And it is also a bit cheaper.

Any news about 2900 series for AGP ? Never heard about it.

it was purely speculative on my part for an AGP DX10 card ...
i think we might see it in a 2900p ... likely in a 2600xt. Didn't they say the Rialto bridge works for r600?

i don't think they would ignore a last upgrade for DX10 AGPers .. old news from theInq:

Gecube launches "fastest" AGP, DX10 board to come

Nvidia plans DirectX 10 cards for AGP slot

hmmm

Get a decent PSU (450w, 30A+ on the +12v or better) and go for a X1950GT/PRO/XT and 2Gb RAM.

Or if you wanted to skimp on the PSU get a 7800GS (try to find a G71 based one...they overclock like the devil) or a 7600GT.

I think there are two AGP 7800GS's in the FS forum going for about $120 shipped each. You might want to check those out.

$$$ is an issue for someone in debt 20k and going into Marine Corps officer school.

Thanks for pointing that out, but I want to get a "new" one since it will be part of a gift :p

As of now its going to be between the 7600GT and the 7800GS I think...unless I see something else that catches my eye ;)

If that's the case, the a 7600GT should do the job nicely.
