I just moved into a new apartment and need a chair mat so my office chair doesn't damage the carpet. The problem is I don't know how thick the carpet is and most mats are sold based on thickness. Anyone have suggestions?

the carpet thickness doesn't matter. the mats are sold in various thicknesses based on 2 things: price and wether or not you have deep pile carpet (like most houses) or commercial type short nap carpet

So then how do you know if you have medium or deep (obviously not low) pile carpet? I suppose I could get this since it's supposedly for all piles.

I have worn out 3 of those mats that you can get at Office Depot or Office Max i forget which. They suck . I went to Lowes and bought a box of 4'x7-1/4"x 1/4"(snap together) laminate flooring for 17 dollars and am using that. So far it works very well. The wheels don't sink in to the mat so my chair rolls easier. I think it is a better way to go.

Here you go Floormat

Unless you have the super-thin carpet found in commercial buildings, just get the thickest one they have. The thiner ones deform after a couple weeks, causing your chair to always sink to the same spot, and also tend to crack and fall apart after a year.

The last plastic mat i used was 35.00 and it cracked after 6 mos. So now i just layed the laminate right on top of the old mat. And it looks pretty good. 17.00 was 20 sq. ft. i think

ManyBeers, I haven't seen anything like that before. I'm putting together an office in my extra bedroom and I may give your idea a try.

Yeah cool. I got tired of those plastic mats deteriorating all the time so i walked around Lowe's one afternoon looking for an alternative and the idea just came to me when i was in their flooring aisle. So far i am happy with the laminate.
