Chaintech VNF4 Bios and Overclocking

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you in on my experience.

I upgreaded to Bios V5.0 on 7/27/2005 (I did it during a reboot using "Alt+F2" with the .bin file on a FD). Anyhow everything went fine, except when I tested overclocking I could only get the HTT frequency to 240-250MHz before my system would crash. This did not use to happen with the previous bios version.

I am now about to upgrade to 512MBx4 for 2GB and I was talking to Chaintech about it and I want to use 400MHz memory speeds (not 333). So, they sent me bios V6.0 (I assume it is a beta). Anyhow, it installed fine and I took the HTT frequency to 300MHz and chose to stop (I don't know where it crashes at and I have active cooling). So far everything works fine. I will put the memory in tomorrow when it arrivers and we'll see what happens.

Man I love this motherboard. I am still running the bios that it came with and it has been rock stable. Overclocked to 2.745Ghz and running at a 305HTT. It runs very well with my 2GB (1GB x 2) Corsair XMS memory. I have it running at ~200Mhz with 2-3-2-5 1t timings. Definantly on my short list of motherboard manufacturers now.

Just a heads up that the Bios V6.0 and 512MBx4 works fine at DDR400. I did fall to 2T so the memory throughput dropped from 5609/5529 to 4853/4873 using Sandra's memory bandwidth test. However, the impact on all 3DM(01,03, & 05) is negligible. So, my expanded cache for BF2 and FEAR is a success so far.

Wow, I just checked the Chaintech site and they blew right past Bios V6.0 and now are at V7.0.

The link you posted is for the S1689 board but your topic (and signature) is the VNF4 ???

Are you running the 1689 BIOS in a VNF4 ?

The official Chaintech BIOS for the VNF4 is V5 but a number of users reported symptoms of a bad flash (so many owners are staying at V4) e.g.:http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=400757

Good catch. My mistake. I am running a beta V6.0 that Chaintech provided on my VNF4. I am surprised that they have not released it on the bios download site. I have had absolutely no probems with it and the overclocking function works correctly again.
