Chaintech TI-4200 Fan not Working

I just got this card from a friend who was using it in his computer. My question is is the fan supposed to run all the time or only when there is a lot of demand on the card?

Should I even run the computer this way? Will the card overheat. (It's not overclocked).

What would be a good fix for this if it's broken?

Thanks for any help.

the fan should be turning all the time. sounds like something is wrong with the fan. around a month back i had similair probs with a ti4200 fan, i've replaced it with a TT G4 cooler, i recommed you do the same.

Definitely do not run it without the fan on. GF4's are designed to have it running all the time. A fan that is expoxied on can be a major pain to remove. Try sticking the card in a bag and then putting it in the freezer. It should make the epoxy more brittle and therefore easier to remove.

I have a similar problem with my MSI GF4 Ti4200, the fan is spinning but with a LOT of noise . . . I want to remove it or replace it since its making too much noise. Any ideas/suggestions?

I've stopped the fan with my screwdriver during day to day browsing, but am planning to try and run it by simply disconnecting the fan. . . apparently it isnt a good idea, may be I wont try it. The noise is mechanical (duh) . . .it must be because of too much crud/dust where the fan is spinning or the fan blades hitting the walls of the heat sink . . . any help will be greatly appreciated. The noise is excruciating.

I have the following Ti4200 by asus

The fan is screw directly onto the heatsink which is a pain. mine made a horribly loud noise when it spins and i've RMA'd this card 3 times and yet again this has happened. I recall they had problems locatinig my RMA'd card when I got there cause many others had RMA'd this exact card as well.

Anyway, I decided not to bother anymore. just unplugged the damn thing so i don't have to put up with the noise. this ti4200 has temp diodes, if your wondering if it's ok to not run the fan, i've tried. it's not. it ran @ 60 degrees in 2D windows mode and nearly 80 degrees playing games.

Best thing is to remove the whole heatsink itself and replace it with this. I bought this G4 cooler and replaced the big a$$ heatsink and fan on that ti4200. u can remove the heatsink by pulling out the 2 little white tabs which hold it in place. not much else to it. P.S. if the blue LED is not your thing, you can buy it without the LED as well. Thats what I got, that LED is rather useless.

Thats sounds good. . . now I just need to rip the heat sink off my card.

Have never replaced heat sinks before. . .hope its easy as how all the web sites reviewing the G4-VGA cooler make it seem.

Any other tips on removing the original heat sink would help . . .thanks a lot!

I wouldn?t want to run a 4200 without a fan.

I have found that a 40mm fan from a local hardware shop and a couple of small ?wood? screws does the job pretty good. (at least on my 7500 it did the job). Just bolt it on some place.

hey i82lazyboy,
thanks a lot for your help so far. . .just one more question: does the thermaltake cooler make noise as well? i mean - not in the zero noise freak kind of a way, but generally . . .can you hear it disticntly?
just to make sure, 'coz i'll be fitting it in to a friends dell that is pretty quite, and wouldnt want it to make noticeable noise.
'coz i read over here at sharkyforums . . . some one says that the noise is the down side.
thanks again

yes the noise is definatly noticable. distinctly? not quite. it blends in with ur CPU fan noise i rekon. if you do want to keep it quiet, try getting a little fan controller that allows u to adjust he fan speed. i usually run the fan @ 3900RPM instead of the 5700 maximum. @ 3900RPM there is no noise.

Before I buy the TT G4 I would like to test the fan to make sure it is dead and the problem is not with the card. What's a good way to do that? (I've taken the h/s and fan off the card--it wasn't epoxied).

Where's the best place to get the G4 Cooler?

Thanks again-
