I guess the FX may still be alive . . . in a NON-DustBuster version!

That thing is pretty awesome looking. That lighting look pretty cool too. What are gas turbine fans though?

I am not an engineer for them so take this with a grain of salt.;)

The fan blades themselves are similar to the pitch and orientation of those on a gas turbine engine. Move a lot of air with minimum rotation in other words.

Just a guess at what they are trying to do.

Nevertheless I betcha it is far from quiet. Along those same lines, how about that pic of the Radeon 9900 Pro? It may be fake, but it looks like the cooler would take up two PCI slots, a la GFFX.

Gotta say that's a pretty sweet looking card, hopefully if this 2 slot design catches on OEMs will at least start sprucing them up for those modders out there. If it's gonna be huge and loud, might as well look pretty! :D

Yep!!!!

Unlike many other GeForce FX 5800 Ultra-based graphics cards, Chaintech's Apogee offering won't use NVIDIA's Dustbuster. Instead, Chaintech has engineered its own cooling solution, which uses two gas turbine-inspired fans and a massive heat sink that generate only 30dB of noise.

For reference, the stock GeForce FX cooler has been measured in the neighborhood of 65dB. Chaintech says they have 30dB nailed now, and they're actually tweaking the cooler in an attempt to get noise levels down to 25dB.

In the test system on display, the Apogee GeForce FX 5800 Ultra's swanky new cooler didn't sound any louder than the stock fans used on Chaintech's GeForce4 Ti graphics cards, which are reasonably quiet.

From the last link:
In the end, NVIDIA may not have many GeForce FX 5800 Ultras for Chaintech, but the nifty turbine cooler will be used for any non-Ultra GeForce FX 5800 cards, so not all is lost. Given that the cooler was designed to cool the toasty 500MHz Ultra chip, Chaintech's regular GeForce FX 5800 cards could have some decent overclocking potential. Chaintech expects to get a shipment from NVIDIA in mid-February, with mass production beginning sometime in March, so it will be a little while before cards are available through retail channels.

Also the article mentions:
Above is a scanned section of an Apogee graphics card roadmap handed out at the Evolution Event without any life-sacrificing non-disclosure agreement attached. What's this mysterious NVIDIA graphics chip running at 300MHz with 128 or 256MB of DDR-I memory at 550MHz? My money's on the NV31, especially since the roadmap also explicitly lists an NV34-based graphics card without any core or memory clock speeds. The fact Chaintech's graphics card model numbering convention uses the "FX" to denote a GeForce FX-based chip helps, too.

Ok, so it's not a huge deal. But, this does offer us a bit of a peek at what NV31 could be.

ANd some of you guys thought I didn't like nVidia . . . :p

:Q

:D

EDIT: Finally . . .
As if the new cooler weren't enough, Chaintech also lights up the Apogee GeForce FX 5800 Ultra in a purple glow, which should appeal to case window-equipped mood lighting fans. Chaintech will also be bundling some cleaning equipment with retail versions of the Apogee GeForce FX 5800 Ultra. Inside the box is a monitor cleaner to get rid of those conspicuous streaks, and an anti-static brush for cleaning dust from the graphics card's fan blades.
Awesome a "riced" GPU. :D

What's the MSRP of the Chaintech . . . still $400?

I want one but I'm not paying $400. The most I've ever paid for a retail vid card was $180 for a Matrox G200 8 meg back in the day. I was pissed when i got home because I found out that PC Wharehouse charged me $10 over MSRP. I've never set foor in their store since.
