Chaintech AV-710 - no sound through SPDIF (except AC-3)

Hey guys,

Just bought an AV-710 for a HT-PC I wanted to build. My gaming computer has an nForce2 motherboard with nVidia Soundstorm chipset on it, and I was really pleased with the Optical (SPDIF) output on that to my stereo tuner (Sony STR SE-501 ... about 4-5 years old but handles Dobly Digital and DTS decoding without a problem).

So, I don't have the cash to build an HT-PC from scratch so I figure that if I can buy a nice 5.1 digital out sound card and throw a DVD-Rom in there I should be all set. So I buy the CHAINTECH AV-710 (very reasonable price and good reviews) but when I install the card I get no sound through my stereo. The stereo reports that it has sound (the little LCD reads "PCM 48Khz" everytime I test the AudioDeck -< Speaker Settings "Drum test" WAV and when I test the Sounds in Windows Control Panel).

The card seems to be outputting some format that my tuner can't handle when in PCM mode (as I said the AC-3 seems to be working fine with the AC-3 filter installed which is up-sampling to Dolby Digital or something so that my tuner can play it).

Anyone have any experience with this? I'm pulling my hair out over this - running out of tests and thngs to try to fix it.

Thanks in advance for your help!
