Are you freaking kidding me? This jacks up the investigation again.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Thursday he will resign from Congress next month, a move that calls into question the future of the House Oversight Committee's investigation of President Donald Trump and his campaign's ties with Russia.

Chaffetz, a Republican, said in a letter sent to media and constituents that his last day will be June 30. He said last month that he would not seek re-election in 2018 and that he was considering leaving office early.

The statement did not mention the investigation he is overseeing as the oversight committee chair into President Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey and the Trump campaign's role in Russia's alleged efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election.

Chaffetz said in the letter he wants to spend time with his family, return to the private sector and possibly run for Utah governor.

Chaffetz had demanded that the FBI hand over memos and notes that ex-FBI Director James Comey reportedly compiled after meetings and phone calls with Trump.

It was reported in april that he wasn't running in 2018, before the comey memo shenanigans.

If anyone thinks he's being forced to quit because he is a competant investigator - wait scratch no one could possibly think that.

Peculiar nonetheless.

Rat jumping ship. Apparently things are getting too hot and he does not want to take any responsibility. At least he did not attempt to derail the current investigations [I think Robert Mueller's appointment has something to do with this rat's resignation. He would most likely have sabotaged Congressional investigations, but he knows he has no control over Mueller's, so he has to hedge his bet one way or another] but considering what he has done for the past 8 years I am not sure he can be forgiven.

IIRC he also allegedly broke his ankle all of a sudden and was absent in the capitol hill last month.

With this news and the latest Reuters revelation, I can no longer presume Tяump campaign's innocence in collusion with Russia.

Like your link says, he's in a no-win situation when the GOP controls everything.

I'm going to go with a high paying lobbying job offer. He's jumping ship now while his brand still has some value.

As I said in the other thread about him retiring, Chaffetz was planning on having a ball investigating Hilary the entire time she was in office, like he did during the Obama administration. With Trump unexpectedly winning, now Chaffetz is caught between the politics of defending Trump versus his duty to diligently investigate. It's giving him heartburn. No fun anymore, so he's quitting.

I notice he used the "wanting to spend more time with my family" excuse. He could at least have come up with a more original pretext.

What was funny about that excuse is that his kids are now out of the house. You would think that the time to spend with your family would have been while your kids were growing up.

He's been really squirrelly lately. The leaving early announcement last month, the 12yr old ankle that suddenly needed fixing, some out of character statements showing enthusiasm for doing the right thing, and now the firm date. Guessing he's getting out before something bad gets out about him.

Chaffetz is a brilliant opportunist with boundless ambition. Seems like another brilliant if sleazy move on his part. Somebody's gonna take a big hit for the team and it won't be him.

He's climbing out before the shit gets over the top of his waders.

He's quitting because he wanted to make a name for himself with endless investigations into president clinton to raise his profile, when that didn't happen, he decided to quit. He can't raise his profile attacking the Trump admininstration. Simple as that. Party over country.
