Too bad it's ugly.

Ugly compared to WHAT in it's class?? It looks plain to me, but by no means UGLY. The Aztek is ugly...the Pilot doesn't strike me as ugly; just boring.

Ok, maybe not ugly....it just doesn't standout. Just another plain old SUV.

I like the Aztek.

You know, down here in South TX, I see more and more Toyota Tundra's on the road every day. I almost bought one...just couldn't picture myself in a pickup truck.

The pilot is a nice sport-cute. Great engine. Not a real truck though. Full-time AWD in a truck? Laughable. No low range transfer case? Laughable. Unit body based on the Odyessy Family Van (!) as opposed to ladder-on-frame? Laughable.

For the record, I owned FOUR HONDA CARS, before buying my Trooper. When an if Honda builds a REAL full-size SUV or Pup truck, I'll buy it.

Don't forget Honda had Isuzu's version of the Rodeo - The Honda Passport. I don't know if that's what you mean by full-size SUV.

Yessir, the Passport is nothing but a rebadged Rodeo selling for $2K more. Technically, the Rodeo/Trooper/4 Runner/Tahoe are considered "Midzize" SUVs...Suburbans/Expeditions/Excursions are considered full size. IMHO, you can't do much off roading in a Suburban anyway...too big for trails.

The Honda Pilot is better executed than the Aztek, but not by much. Both suffer from the same fatal flaw: Pontiac and Honda thought they could stretch their respective sedan's styling cues over the body of an SUV. It just doesn't work. The Honda Pilot looks like the crack addicted older brother of the Honda Civic. It is not a pleasing form.

Actually, the Pilot looks like nothing more than an upsized 1st gen CRV. It's not pretty, but it ain't ugly either--just like Honda's other vehicles.

They are middle of the road designs that don't offend anyone. That's why vehicle like the Accord, Civic, Odyessy, and Pilot sell like hot cakes and vehicles like the Aztek and the Suzuki X90 fail to deliver.

People thought that the new '02 Camry looked like a$$ when it first came out...but it's the best selling car in American by quite a margin for this year and that's all that counts.

Kudos to Honda for making an SUV that looks more boring than most minivans.
Highlander was almost there, but this takes the cake. Saw one in a parking lot, and almost missed it even though it was the only car there, because it doesn't stand out at all. It's by far the most ignorable car I have seen in a long time.
I would wait for Nissan Murano. Now that's gonna be one great road biased SUV. VQ35DE,CVT,awesome interior, agressive exterior. This one will get noticed.
Sure Honda might sell a billion Pilots, but I wouldn't be caught dead driving one.

Well, comparrison wise it stacks up well to a lot of them, but...................man, that is one boring, plain, ugly looking vehicle IMHO...........but then we buy a lot of vehicles for their athstetic appeal and usually add nice wheels etc................that thing just seems like it would look like a box no matter what you did.............

Most people don't give a crap if it looks like a hot-rod. It's a vehicle with a functional purpose. Just like the Camry, Accord, and Highlander, the Pilot aims at middle of the road styling and they DON'T stick out. They aren't aimed to wag their d!cks in peoples' faces and say look at my sloping D-pillar (Murano) or my clear rice lights (Altima).

That's why Hondas and Toyotas sell like they do and why Nissan with all their flashy stuff sellls...well, you know :D

As for the Murano, looking at it's proportions, it's shape, and the way it's situated, it will have about as much interior and cargo space as a BMW X5 (which ain't much). The BMW X5 has LESS cargo room than a 3-Series Wagon. Given that assessment, you'd be better off with an AWD wagon.

Why buy an SUV that can't even AT LEAST fit you more comfortably or have as much cargo room as a wagon? At least SUV's like the Highlander, Pilot, and Explorer can boast bounds of space...the Murano probably won't. And as with all Nissan's, the back of the Murano is a mess.

Anyone seem a Honda Pilot up close? If you ask me, the quality and built of this vehicle is superior compared to any american made SUV.

who's got 30K to buy a car in the normal american family? <----- Upper middle class who won't be driving off road. I think soccer moms will start to jump on it as soon as their leases up with their minivan.

amish, lost all my respect for you right after you said "I like the ASSTEK" :p
That car is butt ugly!!! no wonder the japanese are taking over the car market in america.

Well, that's a given :D My '95 Camry is put together better than our old '97 Explorer XLT was. You could actually cut your finger on door trim pieces in the Explorer.

I got two letters for you. VQ :D
I would not buy an SUV, but if I had to, Murano would be it.
I am sick of these Hondas sell more than Nissan arguments. It's not an election, and I don't let other people vote for which car I should buy. Fine buy more hondas and toyotas. They make Nissans stand out more.
I guess I should buy my clothes at Walmart because that's where most people shop, so it must be better :) I will pick up a pair of shoes at Payless, cus they'll do the job. People who say they only care about functionality are either lying or married :)
Nissans have their flaws, no doubt, but being boring is not one of them. They stick the money where I want it put, therefore my family buys nothing but Nissans.
Honda and Toyota are in a race to see who can make a more boring car. That will be their downfall if you ask me. With US brands quality improving and them bringing exciting european style cars to the states, there will be fewer reasons to buy a toyota or honda than before.

I've got two words for you:

SO WHAT? :D

The Pathfinder has the VQ and still ain't much of a competing SUV these days.

The point is most people don't like flashy cars. If that were the case, everyone would be buying Altimas. The average buying age for Camrys and Accords are baby boomers who want point A to B cars with a given reputation. As for people "lying if they only care about functionality," I guess that the Accord and Camry buyers are liars because neither is a flashy vehicle:p

As for the whole America is getting better argument...they ARE getting better, but if GM keeps making ugly cars like the CTS, Toyota and Honda (AND Nissan for that matter) have nothing to worry about;)

I don't think Toyota will be winning any beauty awards with their ES, LS, or even GS, much less Camry. They almost managed to make a good looking car with the Celica, but last second decided to stick those ugly minivan taillights on it. And neither will Honda with their saturn LS lookalike 2003 Accord, or with any other car they sell except maybe S2000 and NSX.

I've got two words for you:

So What!!

What does that prove other than one online mag thinks that it is the sh!t? :D Motor Trend also gave the Chevrolet Malibu the Car of the Year Award a few years back...and the Thunderbird this year...pffffffffffffffffffffffff.

I don't think Toyota will be winning any beauty awards with their ES, LS, or even GS, much less Camry.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and each one of the Lexus models you mentioned has no trouble outselling their Infiniti counterpart. In fact, the Q45 has been selling like crap since it was restyled. I wonder why? :D Looks plays a big role in the luxury market (MUCH MORE SO than the regular mid-size Camry/Altima/Accord market) and Lexus has no trouble with that.

So far this year:

LS430: 10,777
Q45: 1,676

ES300: 29,320
I35: 11,995

RX300: 30,968
QX4: 6,832

I said lying or married. And since I am not a baby boomer, I don't see any reason to be buying Accord or Camry.

If I were buying a sedan, I'd be getting an A4 1.8T...but that's just me :p

NFS4. Again you come here with these lame sales figures that tell nothing to me.
By your logic Intel CPUs are much better than AMD because they sell so many more. Or that MS makes the best OS in the world because they outsell any other one by a huge margin. Just because more people buy something doesn't make it better. And QX4 and RX300 are totally different machines. One is an SUV and the other is an overgrown Camry. :D
Q45 has been selling bad ever since it first came out because people who can afford it usually aren't into sporty sedans. That doesn't mean it's a bad car, just not right car for the market.
ES300 is hideous, and I am sure current owners are not too happy about sharing styling with Corolla. That said, there is no reason to buy a I35 over a Maxima. I would give Infiniti some time to come up with non rebadged Nissan products, like FX45, G35.

The CRV is Compact...the Pilot is mid-sized and has the same (if not MORE) cargo space than the Explorer due to its width.
no the CRV is mini. explorer sized SUVs, based off of compact trucks, had been called compact SUVs for the past decade and a half. so when did the change happen?

Sales figures mean EVERYTHING to car companies. If you can't understand that, then I'm sorry. If a model doesn't sell, it gets kicked to the curb. The J30 went through this, as did the RX7, Supra, 350Z, X90, Dodge Ram Van, MX6, and Isuzu is about to find this out with their Axiom and Pontiac will soon with their Aztec.

Sales are what sustain a companies business. It's also why Saab is dropping the hatchback for a traditional sedan profile for its new 9-3.

The Escape and CRV are compact SUVs. The RAV4 is a mini SUV. The Explorer, Highlander, Pathfinder, Durango, and Pilot are all mid-size SUV's. The Expedition, Tahoe, Yukon, and Sequoia are all full-sized SUVs.

and what i'm saying is for the last decade and a half the explorer and similar vehicles were called compact SUVs since they were, for the most part, based off of compact trucks. did the EPA change classification this year?
