CFA Exam

Just graduated college in May with a Finance degree. I'm weighing my options, signed up for LSAT exam for Sept 30. I am also considering taking the CFA exams but I know nothing about them aside from the fact that there are 3 exams. If any of you have taken them, I'd like to know your experience with their difficulty level, the amount of preperation you required, etc. Thanks.

I'm currently taking the CPA exam myself, and I will tell you that just as the CPA certification is the gold standard for accountants, the CFA certification is the gold standard in the finance world. It's rigorous and takes several years to complete, but most people to whom I've spoken who have pursued it have said it's worth it.

Given that, are you thinking about going to law school first? I, personally, would focus on one or the other for the time being. If you want to go to law school, then go to law school and focus. Then start studying for the CFA after you pass the bar exam. Likewise, if you want to get some work experience (which I think is the better route unless you're absolutely sure you want to go to law school), then go and work for three or four years and save some money.

I worked with several people that were taking the CFA tests.

IIRC there are 3 tests, generally taken one at a time, one per year... so it would take 3 years min to obtain the CFA.

I know the people I worked with studied their backsides off for at least 3 months prior to each test, and not all of them passed it first shot.

Of the 5 people I was working with that were trying to get it, 2 of them did it in 3 years, 2 in four years, and the 5th took five years.

I would say though, that if you want to work in the financial field it's worth it, as it carries alot of weight in the industry.

Edit to add: I have no personal experience with the tests. I worked in the IT department that supported the Finance area, so I got to know the guys there got to hear all about it...lol

My suitemate is taking the exams (just starting out with the first test), and he's studying his ass off.

Level 1 is mostly the things you have learned in your classed (I would say 80-90%). the passing rate is BAD, you need to get 75%+ to pass it. I am taking it in dec in NYC.
