CF Card Busted?

Camera: Canon PowerShot A40, 2.0 megapixels (it's a few years old)
Card: 128 MB SanDisk CF Card
Circumstance: Took a few photos, uploaded them, saved them, messed around with them, pulled the card out of the flash reader, took a few more pics, and now am getting a CF error when I put it in the camera. The error message when I stick it in the computer says it needs to be formatted but it won't let me format.

I'm really not a geek, just a wannabe, so don't use too many big words in explaining how screwed I am...

[edit] Tried formatting in the card reader and in the camera and neither will format properly.

Yes, CF can fail. You described exactly what happened to one of my cards, a 32MB Delkin. Mine is toast and out of warranty.

Check and see if yours is still covered. If not, well, high speed, high capacity CF is priced better than ever these days.

SanDisk is one of the better brands. Sorry to hear that it went bad.

On the bright side, there is no "Click of Death" associated with CF like Zip Drive and media. It should not have harmed your camera and readers.

Sandisk owns all formats of flash memory. Any other company has to pay for the rights to produce the memory.

Can you format through an external card reader?
