2nd generation? by my count SB is 4th generation

there was the stuff that was mobile and for macs
then c2d/q
then core ix-xxx
now core ix-xxxx
(intel's naming scheme is absolutely terrible)
and all of it can easily be traced back to the pentium pro, so if we add that, the 2/3, and then dothan, etc., we're on the 8 or 9th generation of P6.

:hmm:

I disagree. Because the informed people disagree, and if we look at it from an average joe's point of view ALL the microprocessors can be said its the xx generation of 4004.

What made the P6 that substantiated it as different generation from the original Pentium? Out of order? Tech Report and David Kanter's RWT says the physical register file alone is a big enough change in the OoOE system to call it entirely new. Which is what Sandy Bridge features.

And it is the naming scheme rather than the content that is used by marketing counting. Hence the 2nd generation of Core ix.

I'll rather read AT review and hold the product in my hand than follow the CES/twitt/f*c*book, but it is still fine that there will be some ad campaign for those who like ads.

Obviously people will want to read in depth reviews, see real life bench marks etc. I do still think that the pre-event launch might be of interest.
