certifications

I am currently going for A+ and network +.....Is this a stepping stone or a launching pad? I have extensive an background with the telecommunications industry. I got into it not knowing much about it and found myself dealing with network problems and solutions without any certification. I have also done plenty of web development and CAD design. I just recently became unemployed due to financial situations stemming from the economy. Before I pound the pavement I feel I should become certified. I have been a sort of jack of all trades and master of none. I feel I should now use the time I have to get certs to help further my career. Am I too far behind or are the certs I want first building blocks?

My goal is to become A+ and Network+ certified while I look for a job then go for MCSE or Cisco. What do you guys suggest?

They're good for getting your feet wet, but they won't get you a job. Hell, even a CCNA/DA will only get you as far as an interview these days (but they don't guarentee anything!)

If you pay attention, when you are finsihed A+ you will be really comfortable around computers in respect to Hardware issues. I think it's a good foundation, very helpful if you want to move on to MCSE or CCNA/P.
A+ alone won't land you any work though, unless you get really lucky.

The main thing with certs, is to learn as much as you can. You have to really apply yourself to get the benifit from them. Don't be lured into using braindumps, etc to pass exams. Pass the exams because you can.

From what I have seen of these exams (not the ones mentioned in particular) they are pretty much BS. They dont quiz you on what you need to know. I dont place any faith in certifications myself, but I see how they can help you get an interview.
