Are certifications worth it? I have alittle over 5 years experince in the IT world and I got most of that from the military i am now out in the civilian sector and I'm currently working as PC/network tech. I am getting allot of good experince here and will eventually be moving on, my question is should I get my MCSA and or MCSE relitivly soon? Are they worth the tiem or is my cirrent expernince equal to these? How should I go about getting my cert? Technical college, self study though books and CDS or one of those online streaming viedo things? Thanks in advance!

I work for Duke Energy (IT Coordinator for Canada) and without my MCSE and A+ I would not be in this position...

So, 1 vote from me for get them as soon as you can.

Certs are worthless but without them you'll have a tough time getting an interview. Even my A+ was better than nothing.

Well, that would mean they aren't worthless if they help you get interviews.

Don't expect to get a job out of them alone and in the end, they are better than no certs at all.

Don't take out a loan to get them, but you might as well try. They look better than not having them.

Anything is better than nothing. I don't have certs but am working as a IS analyst for a well respected company and now they want me to get my certs.

Exactly.

They are your foot in the door and proof that you know what you are doing.

Self-trained IT is a dime a dozen these days, proving that you were trained right can help. This is what can get jobs for you, however, hard work and good work will get you promoted.
