Cerny for Playstation president

Just because somebody makes a couple of good games and designs the hardware for one console doesn't mean they are fit to lead. I've worked with many people who are good at what they do but wouldn't be fit to lead a team of 5, let alone an multi-billion dollar division at Sony.

This right here. He's a cool guy and all, but I wouldn't give over a huge division because of it.

I don't know how good he is at business either. I mean there's some fantastic game developers, super talented and who have done some awesome games. They may have been instrumental in creating something. That doesn't mean they can run a business and be part of that hierarchy, that's a different skill set.

He has been the head of a studio. That has to require some form of leadership and planning, no?

Maybe but the publisher is paying the bills and you're just the team head when you run a development studio unless you are 100% independent from any big publisher. So you're still not running the business side.

Like dredd said, there is more to it then just heading up a studio. I have said for the longest time that I would love for Phil Spencer to head up the Xbox division, because much like Cerny, the guy is very intelligent and has a passion for games. But when you take a step back and realize that there are way more important things needed from the Presidents than a passion for games, you can see why these guys don't get those positions.

He might not even want to take such a role. Sometimes, the people that like getting into the nitty-gritty of design just don't enjoy being a "numbers and decisions" guy.

You don't have to be a "Business suit" corporate type to be an effective leader.

Somehow, our society bought into the wallstreet type person is always going to be the best person to be the CEO. Look at our schools. Almost all of our higher level employees are from the business world and know nothing about education.

Leadership qualities come in a whole variety of forms. Some lead by example, some lead by force, some lead by inspiration.

The fact that someone wasn't CEO of McDonalds or Sprint, shouldn't dictate whether or not they can handle something like CEO of Sony SCEA.

Things you need:
-1. Vision
-2. Communication skills
-3. Proven track record of success
-4. Accountability
-5. Ability to make managerial decisions

Video gaming industry leaders typically have all of those skills.
- Gabe Newell, John Carmack, etc.

Video gaming industry also creates "rock stars", who are wildly successful, but do not have what you would expect as typical "leadership" qualities:
- Markus Persson, John Romero, etc.

A rock star, would likely NOT be a good leader. However, don't let that assume that all people who have been uniquely successful in the gaming industry wouldn't be fit to lead a gigantic organization like SCEA.

given that he went from doing marble madness, to working at sega on sonic 2 (which was very unique to the first and 3rd) but not the first or the third, to working on crash 2, to everything since then i would say that he is probably smart enough to be a better businessman than most MBAs.
