I was looking at using Cernax Web Hosting instead of my free web hosting. Is that a good option for reliability and support? Is there better, cheaper options?

$25 / year
50 MB (plenty)
1500 MB transfer

Amol runs it, I think. Watch out, he's crazy. Like, really crazy. Not anal like Nik, not anal crazy like Nebor, but crazy.

It's actually 100MB disk space right now, and so far I am very pleased with this package.

I signed up last week, and purchased my .com domain through namecheap.com for $8.88, and if you register .info it's even cheaper!

The Cernax servers have been pretty speedy, and I've encountered no down time so far. The admin interface (cPanel) is very efficient and easy to use. And with the $25 package you get 4 subdomains and 4 FTP accounts, 4 MySQL databses, 4 e-mail accounts... You could probably also customize that package to get a parked domain for not much more. It takes hardly any time at all for your account to register and sync the nameservers with your domain. I think it took me all of 30 minutes to register both the domain and the Cernax account, and both were working in harmony immediately after.

I highly recommend it, it was the best deal I could find. Very easy to set up and maintain .

I've been using Cernax for some time now.

Overall, I'm satisfied and happy with the service. There are a few hiccups that come up once in awhile but their tech support is super fast. The package price was the best I found and their uptime is excellent.

Do they offer a sort of website design with that?

They host your site, they don't design it.

That's the case with 99% of the hosts out there.

And they charge extra for parked domains?

I know they don't design it, but do they have a *good* program that I can design it with?

No, we don't, however oswd.org is a great resource to get started with.

I appreciate the comments everyone made in this thread, any questions can be sent to me directly at ankit@cernax.com

Thanks AgaBoogaBoo, I think I will try it out. (I'm assuming you started Cernax.com?) I think you have a great business there.

Yes, I did, I appreciate the kind thoughts and hopefully you have an experience like the rest in this thread :)

No, he's in Amol's pants so he's a partner in Cernax.

I really run it.

Well, I'll be honest... the biggest problem I've had so far was PEBKAC. :D

Couldn't figure out why the fvck the servers or whatever wouldn't do whatever they do to get things flowin, so Ankit (AgaBoogaBoo) had to do it for me. Nice guy too, offered to give me a little extra bandwidth if I needed it one month since ATOT fvcked me over for hosting a FG ep. All in all I don't think I can complain about anything except that I don't have the time to learn web-programming as well as I want to.

Definitely would recommend looking into Cernax, and if things fall through then check out Telnap. Gotta give the ATOT economy a little boost somehow.

I'm looking to set up a travelogue like www.m-why.com, but I want to store full size pictures on my trip (2-3mbs each).

What is the most storage space that you guys offer, and can I upgrade at a later time if I get a lower package now? I'm not planning to leave for another year, but would like to design and set up a webpage in the meantime. It'll take me a while to learn CSS and all that stuff!

Secondly, what is a parked domain and do I need one? Thanks!

Yes, you can upgrade to higher plans, I personally reccomend starting out with the $25/year package and upgrade as you need to.

A domain is your .com, .net, etc. You can buy them for $8.88 per year from Namecheap.com.

Feel free to drop me an email with any questions you might have, ankit@REMOVEcernax.com. :)

httpme . heard nothing but good things about them.. a little too expensive for my taste though.

You get what you pay for.

My clients deserve NOTHING BuT THE BEST.

If you think their reseller prices are expensive check out their dedicated servers pricing and I have one :)

Does it matter who I get my domain from? Isn't yahoo cheaper? I think 4.95 and it was even 1.95 for a while? So what is the difference from a regular domain and a "parked" domain?

I'm planning on going through Cernax as I have heard nothing but good things about them. As soon as I figure out a name for my domain I'm going to sign up :)

It'll keep me occupied until I actually leave on my trip

I'm using resellerzoom.com right now. Really cheap, and no problems at all really. There was one month where I had over 48 hours of downtime because of a harddrive failure, but they fixed it and issued me a free month :). I guess it doesn't really matter to me since I only host personal websites.

Their support always answers tickets within 20 minutes, too. I guess I get more than I pay for ;)

I don't think httpme is expensive, I just can't really afford it. And btw, I think purchasing a dedicated server from them would be much cheaper in the long run.
