The chief executive of UnitedHealthcare was fatally shot in the chest in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, according to a police report and two people familiar with the matter.

The report said that the executive, Brian Thompson, 50, was shot just after 6:45 a.m. at 1335 Sixth Avenue, the address for the New York Hilton Midtown, according to the report. Mr. Thompson was taken to Mount Sinai West in critical condition.

Police officers are still searching for the gunman, who fled east on Sixth Avenue, the report said. He was wearing a cream-colored jacket, a black face mask and a gray backpack.

The police believe Mr. Thompson was targeted in the attack.

Mr. Thompson was promoted to chief executive of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021, heading one unit of the larger UnitedHealth Group. He lives in Minnesota.

While motive is so far unknown it's not difficult to imagine the likely possibilities. If we are entering a new era of oligarch robber barons who are going to rip off every last person they can find this sort of thing could happen a lot more.

Despite some of my “eat the rich” sympathies, I really don’t want this to become a trend. Lord knows how many people they’ve fucked over though and forced into bankruptcy via denial of claims. Heard one such sob story just a few months ago on NPR.

BUT killing CEOs in broad daylight isn’t the answer. We need a healthcare system that sets the proper policies for insurance carriers and a justice system capable of dealing with executive malfeasance.

The right to life in the US needs to continue after you are born. It's like some cheer for anyone living to just die if they can't pay pay pay.

One problem with the whole “laws that bind the out group and protect the in group” that so many seem to want to implement is in a country with 300M+ guns it is statistically likely there will be people in the out group who will use those guns to address the “injustice” of the in group extralegally because they know the legal system won’t.

Anyone whose studied our history should know that, but apparently it’s a lesson we’ll have to learn again.

that's a shitty company it seems, many motives i guess?

Wow, Trump isn't even President yet and the world is already going completely bonkers.

Wait does the Trump distortion field only work on the economy or...

Why not? This is the literal "shooting someone on 5th ave." and the incoming POTUS said his people wouldn't care.

Good luck in the era idiots just voted for.

I feel that precious little thought has gone into what happens if the populace at large perceives that both the law and political process holds no remedy for their complaints anymore. The right cheers this because they assume it will benefit them and be cost free. Quite the gamble IMO and not one that history would suggest taking.

I mean, it might be an answer. We sure haven't found another one that works yet.

More good guys with guns staring at their Punisher home screens would likely have prevented this.

Americans are armed to the teeth and very pissed off about a variety of things. This seems to be a fraught time for fucking around.

tbh sounds like this might have been one of those good guys with a gun

The incoming administration has already indicated they don't care about laws unless broken by people of color, so why should we care a billionaire got capped?

BTW - How soon before Trump and the right wing media blame the left for this?

Really hard to speculate on why this happens other than the mask and silencer clearly indicate this was a planned act.

Guy seems like a giant asshole for sure, but I've seen plenty of times where there's all the reason in the world to believe someone was killed for some terrible act with his company and it turns out like his trophy wife had a new boyfriend and wanted him out of the way.

I've seen comments along the line of "this wouldn't have happened if crime wasn't out of control in NYC" and "how could this happen in NYC they have some of the toughest gun laws in the country", so they're definitely throwing in the standard shit. Nevermind that this most likely wasn't some random crime, and guns aren't banned in the city so neither of those comments really apply.

Not to mention that crime is lower in NYC than in most major cities in the US.

It is frankly weird how many people come here and are terrified of being victims of crime, apparently blissfully unaware that the place they come from has a higher crime rate.

Also, where there is a will, there is a way. Shinzo Abe was assassinated in Japan, a country with very strict gun control, by a guy with a homemade shotgun.

Because our worthless media hypes violent crime to scare people while ignoring widespread crime like wage theft.

If the system doesn't dole out justice, individuals will start taking it into their own hands. Considering who was just voted into office, I am not holding my breath on the system being fixed.

I agree in a civil society this isn't the answer but I disagree were in a civil society. If the CEO condemns others to death because it's profitable for his org, I see this as completely reasonable.
