I got the Dell 600M and it seems too big and heavy compared to my iBook that I had.

I'm looking at the Asus S5Ne now, but it only has a 1GHz Pentium M. Is that the PIII mobile chip or the new Pentium M? I'm confused.

Now the 12" iBook weighed about the same as the 600M, but the Dell seems soooo heavy. :(

edit: I guess I should look at the Dell 300M...I hate to spend more money though.

That is the new Pentium M that's in Centrino. I guess they don't use the intel wireless.

The reason the dell 600m seems so heavy is because it has a 14" screen. It's just a classic appearance illusion.
I dont think you'll find many 12" SXGA notebooks. Why? Because the screen is small, and SXGA would probably make everything look extremely tiny.

The 300m can only have an XGA screen, because of its size.

If you decide to get a 12" XGA notebook, I recommend you get an IBM over everything else. The X series is composed of ALL 12" notebooks. If you dont need great graphics, you should definitely get an IBM because of its excellent build quality.

Edit: The Pentium-M is much better than the Pentium III-m.
Don't be fooled by its name; it sounds like a pentium 1 to the average consumer. Its performance is comparable to the Pentium 4-m. Recently, a new version of the processor has been released, after MANY delays. Dothan is its codename. It should have a good performance increase over the current pentium-m.

If you need any more help with processors, dont hesitate to ask the notebook forum. If you do, you might end up with a crappy processor in your notebook. :D

I am used to a touch pad and don't know if I could get used to the stick pointer again. I know IBM is prefered over Dell. I would have gotten a T series if I could have gotten one for the same price as this 600m ($1200). I am going to try this thing out for a couple weeks and may exchange for a 300m. I only planned on keeping this thing for less then a year anyway.

I have been reading up on notebooks for months. For what I want a notebook for, graphics aren't as important as portabability. (I think I am talking myself into getting the 300m) Right now, it's about the same price with the promotions.

Just FYI,

First is Pentium III-m
Then came Pentium 4-m
Then came Pentium 4 Desktop chips used in laptops, and just called Pentium 4
Then came Pentium 4 Desktop-replacement chips, which was officially called Pentium 4 Mobile(different from Pentium 4-m, Pentium 4-m was more mobile than Pentium 4 Mobile)
Then finally came Pentium M, which is the low power consumption high performance chip, also called Centrino when bundled with Pentium M chip, 855 chipset, and Intel 2000 series wireless(eg. 2100, 2200).

The 300m has been discontinued. The Latitude X300 should still be available, but it's way overpriced.

Sony has 12" V505 w/Centrino, but not SXGA. Also Sony S series is 13.3" w/Xbrite & Centrino , but again no SXGA

While you are looking at the Portege M200, take a look at the R100 as well.

2.4 lbs and .7 inch with a 12" screen :)

Toshiba makes a tablet PC...protege something or the other (I forget exactly what--my gf has it). It has a 12" SXGA+ screen and a touchpad...not to mention the tablet capability. I prefer my IBM T42, but I think that Toshiba fits the bill. It's also a Pentium-M (centrino); I think my gf has a 1.6 or 1.7 (banias).
