Centrino Speed Step Not Clocking Up with A/C Power?!?!

I bought a Dell i6000 with the 2.0 GHz Centrino processor. When running on the battery, the System Properties shows 798 MHz. Great, however, when I plug the power cable back in it remains at 798 MHz. I've used the Dell QuickSet controls to select "Maximum Performance" but it won't clock back to 2.0 GHz. I have to restart the machine with it plugged in before it will again run at 2 GHz.

Is there a certain way to get it to *always* run at ~800 MHz on battery and 2 GHz on A/C?

BTW, this is the case even under extreme processor usage.

Have you checked for a BIOS update?
I have a Dell B130 with a 745 Pentium M and it will go up to the rated 1.8GHz (when needed) on battery or AC. But most of the time it will go down to 600MHz, sometimes it does take a while to kick upto full speed and then it depends on the application.

By the way, there is no such thing as a Centrino processor. Centrino is a platform, an all Intel platform (video, wireless, chipset, CPU). My system doesn't qualify as a Centrino system because it has a Broadcom wireless card.

Get a copy of speedswitchXP. Set it to Max Battery on DC (battery) and to Max Performance on AC(plugged in).

Default behavior of the OS/CPU/Mobo is to stay at low speed all the time to keep heat down. It's only supposed to throttle up during CPU load demand.

I did find out that after I installed Quickset R122667.EXE, v.7.1.8, A36 my system would not go upto 1.8GHz while on battery. So I went back to Quickset R116125.EXE, v.7.0.10, A33 and it now will go upto 1.8GHz, when needed, on battery.

Also, keep in mind that Speedstep is not active when on A/C power - only on battery power. And, you can turn it off completely.

OK - I suppose it depends on what "active" means. It only is supposed to do something when on battery power. It can be "active" in background but not actually doing anything.

It can also be uninstalled. It is a program. If you ever do a clean reinstall, it will normally not be on your machine unless you install it from one of the auxiliary CDs that come with the laptop.

To clarify: SS
