I'm experimenting with / learning about subnets and multiple routers and have connected two DI-614+ routers via their WAN ports to LAN ports on my SMC7004BR. I'm not running any Servers (yet... been running via WorkGroups since WFWG 3.11 days), so since my Browse Lists are "subnet bound", I've implemented a Centralized LMHOSTS file (instead of WINS) located on my "future" PDC for Name Resolution. All of the other PCs on all subnets "call" this LMHOSTS file via:
My Setup:
SUBNET 0:
- #
- 192.168.0.11 Server1 #PRE #"PDC" - needed for wireless subnets
- 192.168.0.12 Server2 #PRE #"BDC" - needed for wireless subnets
- #
- #BEGIN_ALTERNATE
- #INCLUDE \\Server1\Public\lmhosts #adds LMHOSTS from this server
- #INCLUDE \\Server2\Public\lmhosts #adds LMHOSTS from this server
- #END_ALTERNATE
- #
- Workstation1 (Win2K Pro) and Server1 (NT4 Wks) on Subnet 0 each have a persistent MAPPED DRIVE to Laptop1 (Win98) on Subnet 1 that is immediately available upon boot/reboot (of any of the three PCs).
- Laptop1 has persistent MAPPED DRIVES to Workstation1 and Server1, but only Server1 is available after a boot/reboot - Workstation1 reports "The network path was not found".
- nbtstat -c on Laptop1 shows only Server1 and Server2 after boot/reboot.
- nbtstat -c on Workstation1 shows everything - Server1, Server2, Printer1, Printer2, etc...
- After running nbtstat -R on Laptop1, everything works properly (until the next boot/reboot)
My Setup:
SUBNET 0:
- Router WAN IP: 68.x.y.z (cable modem ISP)
- Router LAN IP: 192.168.0.254
- DHCP Server Available IP Range: 192.168.0.1 thru 192.168.0.10
