<<The CIA gave 79 employees with minimal involvement letters of warning or security briefings.>>

Does anyone else find that a somewhat disturbing undertone to that idea?

What happens after you are exonerated?

<<Eight employees were exonerated, the CIA said. >>

Does that mean you can't have anymore kids?

Ok, who was the narc? Think they'll be the subject of a sudden "black" operation?

I'm writing a movie script, that's for sure.

From CNN:

The Central Intelligence Agency has fired four employees and disciplined 18 others for using an unauthorized chat room hidden in the agency's computer system.

The chat room, used primarily to exchange jokes, gossip and off-color remarks, was by invitation only. Chat room users would vote on whether to accept new members, who would then pledge not to reveal the cyber room's existence, a CIA spokesperson said Friday.

About 160 employees were involved over the years in the chat room, which began in the mid-1980s as an unofficial users group on the mainframe.

Security on the Net

A seven-month investigation found no "unauthorized disclosure of classified information. But that the activities that were the subject of this inquiry were a clear and serous violation of the trust expected of all agency employees," a CIA statement released Thursday said.

The dismissed employees, including a senior intelligence officer, had their security clearances revoked, "rendering them ineligible for continued CIA employment," the statement said.

Some participants took elaborate steps to keep the activity concealed from agency management and other employees, according to an agency bulletin.

Eighteen employees, including two senior intelligence officers, were issued letters of reprimand and most will be suspended without pay for days or weeks. In addition, nine contractors had their security clearances revoked, meaning they could not work on CIA contracts.

The CIA gave 79 employees with minimal involvement letters of warning or security briefings. Eight employees were exonerated, the CIA said.

OK, I can understand the problem if they were discussing classified information...

But if it's just chatting with a coworker, WTF is the problem?

Viper, sounds like there were some possible harrassment type issues involved also. Not to mention probably some retaliation from management over this going on so long without them finding out.......

They coulda' just used AIM or ICQ, but OHHHHHHHHH NO:). Gotta' chat on a CIA mainframe.

Bobtist...

Think, man... They probably have their internet connections locked down so tight that you could NEVER run AIM or ICQ, if they even have internet connections at all.

I'm suprised to see such a harsh reaction to such a petty crime. Its not like they were eating up to much bandwidth or computer cycle time. A chat room doesn't use much at all... There must be more to it than what is in the article... I could see them shutting it down, and several slaps on the hand, but what's the point of busting a bunch of chatters...

I suspect that people didn't know about the existence of that chat until they were voted in & officialy invited. That'd be the only sensible way to run such a thing.

Probably for most companies it wouldn't be a big deal. For big, paranoid organizations like the cia and apple computers, such actions lead to firing.
