central air conditioning question

No Lifer
Was installed already when we bought the place so need to know how it works...

We turn it on and it seems to settle at 77F. We try to adjust the slider below that mark (currently at 60F just to test) and it still stays at 77F, even after hours. We hear the air coming out the entire time - most likely moderating it.

Is it normal for CAC to keep the temp at "room temp of 77F" without being able to adjust it ?

EDIT> I should add that the "fan switch" can be at "auto or cont". It's been at auto the entire time but it also never shuts down or anything... so what's really the diff between auto and cont. ? 😕

Maybe the condensor is just underpowered? It's also possible that either the outside unit is getting too cold and freezing, or that you need to stock up on freon.

You probably have it programmed for that temp. You can override it by using the "hold" function. You ought to have something like that if it is a programmable thermostat.

Meh, just read your post again. Make sure the thermostat is set to cool.

<-- wasn't aware you need to recharge the freon on a CAC unit. We've been here for a couple years so don't know if it needs it or not. If it is low, would the temp get higher and higher ?

Have it checked. If you have a pen thermometer check the difference in temp between the intake and the registers. Should be around 10 degrees. If not get it checked. Could be low on freon, dirty coils, bad capacitor (is the outside fan running?), etc. Have you changed the filter?

eh you need to recharge them with freon? heh didnt know that. how often do you need to do that?

the fan should go on and off when the thermostat is satisfied, that is when it has reached the temperature you set it at. if it's blowing 24/7 you have a wiring problem with the thermostat. 'cont' stands for continuous and is a manual override for the fan.
