I need to deploy a tomcat webserver, and I'm struggling to decide between CentOS and Ubuntu.

I'm mostly a windows guy. I know my way around Ubuntu a little better than CentOS. Where I work (at a top tier datacenter) the guys around the shop are saying CentOS is better.

Thoughts?

Im sure both can handle what you need them for just fine, however in the situation you mention I would go with CentOS. If only for the fact that if the rest of the shop swears by it, when something goes wrong thats over your head, odds are those guys know what to do about it. Sometimes better support makes something the right tool for the job.

This will put CentOS over Ubuntu for me. You can't go wrong with either though.

Ubuntu tends to have newer kernels, which can be handy for the latest chipsets and SAS controllers.

CentOS is a copy of Red Hat, so there's a bit more documentation and help available.

For a physical Apache + Java server, the OS itself won't make a lick of a difference (well, as long as it isn't Windows ;)).

Better is subjective, but CentOS is effectively RHEL compatible so it's the safer choice for non-free software and finding documentation for "enterprise" software.

I do not trust the stability of Ubuntu for enterprise level, its either Debian or Centos.
Debian has the same feel as Ubuntu.
