centiped problems

we recently moved to a new place - a typical 2 story house - and i took the basement as my room. before we moved, the old place had its own share of bug problems, so we thorougly fumigated the whole place prior to moving. it seemed good for a while, then all of a sudden these revolting creatures started appearing on walls. strangely they like my room the most; i was shocked when i caught the last one yesterday; this one was easily double the size of the older ones. my roomate tells me i should clean the room, but its just buncha books lying on the floor and whatnot, not like i leave unfinished food around.

what are possible sources of attraction for centi/milipeds and whats the best way to remedy them? dunno fumigating again would help. i was told they can bite and it really hurts when they do. better yet, isnt a miliped bite almost as lethal as scorpion venom? to make matters worse, my mom told me they have tough shell that would allow them survive being smashed by thick books :Q thank god we got some insecticide sprays in the house.

let alone the safety issues, i absolutely despise these things. i dont like roaches or spiders, but nowhere near enough i abhor these multilegged, devil's own creation :disgust: if you have any insight or personal experience in defeating them please share your ideas here 🙂

omg, i feel your pain. I absolutely hate bugs. I once had to stay the night at my friends house in NJ (I live in NY), because my roommate had found a huge roach the night before and wasn't going to be there the next night. Somehow it's alright if she's there, but the thought of being alone with cockroaches freaked the crap out of me.

my g/f had this problem. They're coming in on your water pipes, best bet is go to Kroger or Publix or some other grocery store and get a PET SAFE bug killer. Spray it in all the corners of your room and along all the floorboards, then around the toilet, bathtub and under the sinks. It'll kill them all b4 they come in but make sure it's pet safe.

if it's not pet safe then don't spray the bathroom cause it could be harmful to humans, plus the pet safe stuff smells like roses and it's all organic.

anyways it should take care of the problem if you do it monthly.

EDIT: I can't spell /hides face

Centipedes are worse than spiders. I had a centipede problem in a duplex I lived in two years ago in Indiana. Nothing completely eliminated them. If you read up on centipedes, they usually have a nest in the ground near the location you are seeing them. I searched all around the outside of my duplex and never found the nest. RAID will kill them, slowly. Spraying RAID around your room (floorboards, corners, etc) frequently will cut down the numbers a bit. Getting some stronger stuff focused on centipedes (I forget the chemical name but you can look it up online and buy it in gallon size containers with a pump) and spraying the outside of the house once a month will cut the numbers in half or so. Centipedes can live for three or four years. They hybernate in the winter in their nest. They do eat small spiders. Yes, they bite, and the bites are like spider bites but swell up a bit larger. Centipedes can and do climb on all six walls of a room (including floors and ceiling in that). They prefer the dark. If you want to avoid getting them on you, keep a light on in your room at night.

Centipedes suck.

it's called diazinon, you get it and put it into a pump sprayer, spray 3 feet out and 3 feet up all the exterior walls of your house. That should take care of most pests

god damn they are disgusting, i cant stand them they are the only bug that really freeks me out

call an extirminator see what they say, you can et things you place around you house that will attract and kill them

First of all, I'd call an exterminator and see what they can do for you. They should hopefully be able to deal with this problem and solve it.

Secondly, millipedes are basically harmless. They eat vegetation and don't bite. They will curl up into a ball if they're threatened.

Centipedes are the ones you have to worry about. Depending on the species, they can be poisonous if they bite you.

this is really nasty. i would call some fumigators to see if they can help solve your problem - see if they offer some sort of guarantee.

We get them in our basement also. I can never figure out how they get in. They used to freak me out, now I'm used to just stomping on them when I see them. Over the past 2 years, probably have killed about 40 of them.

They love damp and dark areas. Run a dehumidifier, and keep some sort of light on, and it should help. Pesticides are the only solution that will kill them, but you can prevent them from wanting to live in your room if you keep it dry, clean, and light.

whoa, so many replies in just a few minutes... everyone, thx for your replies.

i stand corrected, they are milipeds, they get curled up like a lil ball when we go CRAZY with raid on them🙂

also, i forgot to mention my roomate brought some stuff from the older place that had been sitting in the garage. now they are in the newer garage, which is directly connected to my room. after i am done posting this we are gonna fumigate the garage again, hope they dont run to my room lol 😀

I have a bad case of house centipedes in the summer, they get to about 2 or 2.5 inches long. Fast as hell, too. They don't bug me much because they stay downstairs and I don't go there much. Also, they're shy and nonaggressive, and not poisonous. The past few years or so I've seen more of them and fewer wolf spiders, which is just fine & dandy by me. The centipedes are like, whatever - just kill em and it's done. Spiders freak me out though 😱 They're hairy with large abdomens and get to about 2.5 - 3 inches across in my area :Q

They're not gonna hurt you, assuming that's the kind you're dealing with (and it most likely is). It's the common house centipede; sorta like a spider or something.
