I have a Soundblaster Live 5.1 soundcard and Cambridge Soundworks FPS1800 speakers (4.1). Since the SB Live 5.1 has a center channel out can I simply plug a good, small speaker into this and have 5.1 sound? I suppose I could allways build or buy a small amplifier.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

The output on your soundcard is line level, and requires amplification before it can be sent to a speaker with speaker level input. Unless the speaker you have is powered/amplified, and/or your FPS1800 speaker system has an extra channel of amplification you can use(of suitable wattage/impedance) you wouldn't be able to use just any good, small speaker. I'm not sure what you have in mind, but most good, small speakers and amplifiers will cost more than your entire FPS1800 speaker system.

I would like the 5.1 sound but for me to upgrade to the 5.1 speakers it would be $100 for a cheap set. The set I really want is about $250.

Hmmn, well, how much do you think you can get good small speakers and build an amp for then? What kind of speaker and amp are you looking at?

The other option I just thought of is buying a set of speakers (Like these) and using them as a "ghetto" front channel. Since they are amplified. I guess it will be kinda like a ghetto 6.1 set up. They are only $36 at newegg or $39 at Best Buy. I would use both speakers as a front channel along with the subwoofer.

I suspect that what you're describing would work, although I can't say for certain since I've never tried it (I'm happy with 2 speakers connected to my PC). However... does Creative make any 2.1 speakers setups with the same or similar satellites that are used by your FPS1800? If so, I'd highly recommend that you get those instead of the Logitech speakers that you linked to. It's always best to stick with similar speakers from the same manufacturer, especially for the front left/center/right channels.

Off topic: I checked out your Newegg link. E-gads, what have they done to their layout? Yuck, ick, phthui... ugh. Yeah, it's been a while since I've visited their site :).
