Along with the population
growth of the 1990s came big changes in the face
of the American household ? the number of
unmarried couples soared by 71 percent, dwarfing
the increase in married couples.

I am a part of that statistic, kind of anyways. My wife and I got did the whole marriage ceremony thing. However, the pastor was from my in-laws church and moving to the sticks in Northern Cal the very next day. Well, he forgot to mail in our marriage certificate to the county. I got a phonecall about 2-3 months later from the county offices asking if we ever did get married since they never got the final copy. My wife was pissed at her family at the time and didn't want to deal with looking up the pastor, and neither of us really cared about being "official" so we said screw it and stayed officially unmarried. We are "married in the eyes of the lord" but neither of us are religious so that doesn't mean anything to us. For all intensive purposes we are married though, we just don't get hit with a marriage penalty come tax time.

That wasn't as disturbing a phonecall as the one from the state saying "You're a deadbeat dad who isn't paying child support" when my son has lived with me his entire life. That one was easily handled with a return phonecall so it wasn't a big deal, just a shock to get.

highme: heh I got harassed for months by Dept of Family and Child services because someone else had my first middle and last name and was a deadbeat dad in the same city. It turned into quite a fiasco and I think my wife at the time started believing it was really my kid, even though it was obviously the wrong race. 🙂

I've been a happy member of this statistic for about 2 years now. Mainly holding out for two reasons. One is that neither of us want to be married as young as we are. The second is that if we were married, she has to claim MY income on financial aid for school. This would be a BAD thing. My income is pretty sizable for just the two of us and she would loose a BIG portion of funding. Once she get's out of school we'll get married, but until then we'll be sinners 😛
