Alltel is a very poor choice. I think they have one of the worst plans around. I have 2 phones with Sprint and am happy with them. The rates are good and the minutes included work well for me. They've sort of changed in the past couple of months, but overall, still a solid company. The only downside is that you have to buy the phone, while with some of the other companies it's a lot cheaper (or free) as long as you sign up for a year. Be sure to check the PCS store and online to see the promotions. I ordered online b/c I got $50 off the phone. I opted for Sprint b/c at the time, I did not want a year contract, but I eventually signed up for it in the end.

I use my cell for all long distance calling. I have the $34.99 (1200 min) package and have NEVER used all of my minutes. You can also switch you LD carrier to Sprint and get $50 plus the montly fee waived, which is a nice deal, too.

From the commercials I've seen, Verizon looks ok, too, but I know little about them.

AT&T has the best reception of all the other services I've seen. Sprint quality sucks big time, at least in NYC area.

I have had difficulties with Sprint overloading their network. They claim it doesn't happen, but I can't get on at various times of the day. However, it is still probably better than what else is out there. Make sure to ask someone in YOUR area how it works and if they get "network full" messages when they try to call out.

I'm in the hunt also (Dallas, TX). I've narrowed my choices down to Sprint PCS and AT&T.

It really depends on your area. Sprint in Chicago sucks, but in LA its not too bad. But their customer service in any state is the absolute pits. Plus they were big because they were the no contract people. Now they practically force you into these contracts so they suck. Im thinking cingular once i finish with sprint in december.

One thing to note is nextel. I was looking at their rates last night and they actually are getting pretty cheap for what you get. Theyre really turning into a consumer cell company because they have all the standard features (voicemail, callwaiting, free nights and weekends, web, text messaging etc) but also give a few thousand direct connect minutes. direct connect is when you use the thing like a two way radio which i think can come in really useful at times.

But my next cellcompany will be whoever offers a decent, cheap SMS. SMS is when you send phone to phone text messages. almost nobody does it right in the US so dont try saying cellphone AIM or web messaging are the same. In europe and asia just about every kid and adult have cellphones and they use SMS constantly. Its much easier than the text messaging we have here, its really really cheap and their phones are designed around that feature so its pretty easy to read and store. I think the US is trailing in the cellphone area but then im sure theres people out there who will get angry for me saying something like that.
