Cell phones while driving - Plague of the roads

This probubly won't surprise many people, but a recent series of studies (Google link to several of them) has proven that even if a user is driving with a hands free phone system that they still prove to be a very big hazard to all drivers on the roads. Even those using hands free celular phone systems still tend to have issues with paying attention to traffic and their driving. It's not so much a problem with having your hands wrapped around a cell phone as much as it is the high distraction level that it causes to drivers who have to drive during major congestion periods where 110% of your attention is required for the road.

Personally, I believe that government needs to come up with some system that not only bans cell phones being used while driving, but totally prevents them from either functioning during driving or they need to have a "Phones OFF and completely unused during driving" rule. AKA, when that ignition gets turned over, the phone goes off. PERIOD! Once you're parked and out of your car, you may turn it back on and use it. IF the call is important, they'll leave you a voice mail. IF you need to make an important call, pull over, park, then make the call.

Personally my vote is for a 100% total ban on any kind of use of phones in a vehicle, be it driver or passenger. Cause even a chatty passenger on a cell phone can distract the driver, and that's a no-go in my book. They should not only have a 100% ban on any active phones in a moving vehicle, on public transportation, or in an area where the distraction it will create may cause a dangerous situation. On top of this the police should have some kind of device that can both detect an active cell phone, but also pinpoint the vehicle it is in and ticket the end user.

What is your opinion of this?

Some ppl multitask better than others behind the wheel. With that said, it doesn't matter if it's a cell phone or changing CDs or drinking coffee. Doing anything aside from focusing your eyes on the road with a clear mind is dangerous... even talking to someone sitting beside you.

I endorse banning of cellphones - including hands free use (although this one is essentially impossible to enforce) - while driving except in case of emergency. I really can't be bothered to get into it now but yes it's more distracting than drinking coffee or talking to somebody beside you in the car.

Don't forget to ban stick-shifts since drivers have to take 1 hand off the wheel.

Exactly. I find that when I use my hands free versus holding the phone, there is only a slight difference. About the only advantage is that one hand is not tied up holding the phone to your ear.

that's a totally different situation.. I don't care about driving with one hand.. it's the looking in the vanity mirror and operating another device
and not looking at the road that bothers me.

just so everyone is aware, there most states already have rules on driving while distracted, which talking on a cell phone definately constitutes. Problem is that no one obeys the rules. Some cellular companies are already giving hands free headsets with all phones (at&t wireless for sure). I am always on my phone while driving, but I also always have my headsent on, and I dont have any problems. On a sidenote, people talking on cell phones while in line at a store, walking threw the mall, or other public places is annoying. A good rule of thumb for cell phone use is only talk on your phone in a place you would feel comfortable singing (such as your car).

While we're at it, let's ban having a conversation with a passenger, that's distracting.

Let's ban having children/infants in a car, Lord knows they're a distraction.

No more radios/cd players in cars either, how the hell can people expect to concentrate on the road while singing or dancing to music.

what about doctors?
they need to be in contact all the time and for them, time tends to be critical.
i know this because my brother in law is a doctor. So turning off the cell phone isn't really an all around option.

Would it also be legal to ban all stupid and clueless people from the roads too? 🙂

I know plenty of them in my area. Total airheads. 😀

Yeah baby! Let's just cut to the chase and ban driving. That easier to enforce, no?

On the serious side, I think we should just wait and see if the laws implemented in selected states result in fewer cell-related injuries/accidents. If it's that obvious it has a direct affect, I'm all for it. Otherwise, let people use their own judgment in the remaining states.

Well, I think that exceptions could be made for doctors and other people in roles where they abosolutely HAVE to have a cell phone.

The rest of the idiots who carelessly use cell phones while driving and cause problems can go shove their phones up their (*choose your favorite orifice*) for all I care. If you use something responsibly, you should be allowed to have it. IF not, then you don't need it and shouldn't have it. That goes for cars and other things like that too.

Sure, and while we're at it with the regulations, let's ban women drivers. And Chinese drivers. And any other "bad driver" stereotype we've supported in the past. Hell, no one but blond-haired blue-eyed Caucasian males should be allowed on the road, right?

Any of this sound familiar yet?

Damn Road Nazis. I use a handsfree kit when driving, and keep calls short.

All I know is: most of the time you're behind someone on a cell, you can tell they're on a cell. They'll driiiiiiift one way or the other....correct suddenly.....driiiiiift the other direction.....correct again.....etc. They may think they're in control, but if you're almost hitting the curb or crossing the center line every other minute, you're not in control. End of story. Everyone thinks they can drive and talk just fine, but most people really can't.

I'm torn on this one. I've been rear ended in traffic in the LA 3 times in the last 8 years, by people that were to busy dialing a cell phone number, and not payhing attention when traffic came to a stop.

So having hands free sets wouldn't have helped there. They still would have been messing around dialing.

And as pointed out above people like doctors that are in contact keeping someone alive really need it. And need to be travelling tothe person they need to work on.

But in my case the number of times I've been rear ended and the people actually admitted to being dialing the phone at the time, points out that there is a serious problem that needs to be dealt with.

Now what to do about it? I have no idea. I would vote if given the chance to, to not have cell phones work in moving vehicle's period.

Doctors worked for years without them. They could probably continue to work without them now.

And certainly the single LA driver in a car needs to be paying attention at all times, especially out on the freeway, where there are so many stupid drivers that can cause a fast slowdown.

But what do you do? Let the government get yet another hold on our freedoms? Take even more liberties away? Or let insruance companies deal with it, and put up with ever increasing insurance rates?

I like the insurance aproach. IF they're stupid enough to get in an accident while using a cell phone, instant 3x'ing of their insurance rates! No questions asked! IF they're gonna be an idiot, we make them pay. Also add a law that says you can use a cell phone in a car, but you cause ONE problem, and you loose the right to drive for 6 months and the cell phone plus a huge fine. Hopefully that'll make SOME people think twice, and others will have to just hitch a ride and try not to be so ignorant.

this is applicable to just about anything though imho

getting into a song you really like, changing teh cd, talking to your friends (passengers), getting road head

can't possibly ban all those activities
