Cell phones: When is small TOO small?

I've got a Kyocera 2035 cell phone. I've had it for about two years. It's definitely not the smallest or lightest phone out there, but it gets the job done and I've dropped it probably about 15 times in the past two years (out of my car onto concrete, down a flight of steps, off the kitchen counter, etc.). Take a licking and keeps on ticking.

I was thinking about upgrading my phone so I went to go look at some newer models. They are SOOO tiny and flimsy/fragile. I don't see how people can be comfortable holding these phones up to their ears to use them. And if you drop it, you're friggin' screwed.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr

Guess I'll be holding on to this one for a while :p

tiny phones can still be sturdy...I have a sony-ericsson T39, which is a pretty small flip phone...I've dropped it about 10 times by now and it's still in great shape.

Watch Zoolander :)

Eventually PDAs and cells really should merge, staying at a medium size and using savings from component shrinkage to add more battery capacity. Onboard wifi and bluetooth of course, so the phone can use wifi to call out if cell service is out, and cell for PDA net access if no wifi. (Yes, I know there are already a few PDA-phones)

i had a nokia 82-something and i thought it was a comfortable size. it might have bordered on the small side (i got frustrated finding it sometimes) but it was pretty durable (considering the numerous times I've dropped it).

Getting the Sony Ericsson T616 next week though.. can't wait. :p

What's with the roll up eyes? Studies have shown that the average distance between the ears and the mouth on a woman is 4.5 inches. Therefore anything less than that is too small.

Small phones should be stronger than big ones... Look at how far an insect can drop and not get hurt. You try the same thing and see what happens. I wish my phone was thinner.

They actually got so small that they've started to go up in size a little. I mean with all of this color screen, etc you can only go back up, you can't get any smaller.

Don't forget that it has to last a good five to six hours of use before needing a recharge.

But you could just take the charger with you and get neverending pleasure from your unit ;)

Way Off topic here... ahem as I was saying my big hands have to be able to press one button without hitting the others surrounding it in the process. The newer Siemens are a case in point.

I have a really tiny cell phone - the Samsung A530. It's very light, very small, but definitely sturdy. The Motorola T720 that my friend has feels flimsy when making a call - I feel like if I put it up to my ear too hard it'll snap in two. Also, when you flip it it just doesn't have a sturdy feel. My A530, however, is solid - I really have no worries about breaking it.

I've been using Motorola V60's and although lacking in some features compared to some newer phones I find their RF performance, size, and durability impressive.

Most phones get damaged on the outside when dropped. The electronics are fairly durable. If potted, electronics can take considerable abuse. Add a titanium chassis and you're all set. :)

Flip style phones are most likely to be damaged especially if dropped while in use.

Cellphones could be built into eyeglass frames as well using transreflective TFT technology to display video with transparency. Of course this opens up the door to all kinds of cheating for school kids!
