Cell phones - International calls cheaper than local?

I had to make a few international calls recently, and was forced to use my cell phone for a variety of reasons. I was expecting to pay an extortionate amount because, during peak times, even local calls are charged at 35 p/min.

I was pleasantly surprised however, when the bill came in - at peak times, calls to Eastern Europe were charged at considerably less than local rates - not only that, but it was cheaper to use the cell phone, than the landline!

which carrier do you use?

I usually call a calling card for my international calls from a cell.

i just got an insert with my at&t bill for international calling. They charge you $4.99/month in addition to your monthly bill and you now have international calling on your plan.

I would never call internationally on a cell phone, that's crazy unless it's a brief conversation < 10 mins.

Instead I would use OneSuite which offers the best overall value.

Depends on the country:
Here in the US international calls from cellphones are way too expensive
In the UK on most of the networks it is indeed cheaper than a landline
