Cell phone use in pregnancy may cause ADHD

"We have shown that behavioral problems in mice that resemble ADHD are caused by cell phone exposure in the womb," said Taylor. "The rise in behavioral disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure."

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is a developmental disorder associated with neuropathology localized primarily to the same brain region, and is characterized by inattention and hyperactivity.

Taylor and co-authors exposed pregnant mice to radiation from a muted and silenced cell phone positioned above the cage and placed on an active phone call for the duration of the trial. A control group of mice was kept under the same conditions but with the phone deactivated.

The team measured the brain electrical activity of adult mice that were exposed to radiation as fetuses, and conducted a battery of psychological and behavioral tests. They found that the mice that were exposed to radiation tended to be more hyperactive and had reduced memory capacity. Taylor attributed the behavioral changes to an effect during pregnancy on the development of neurons in the prefrontal cortex region of the brain.

Bullshit.

Not telling your child "No" during early childhood causes "ADHD".

Is there any way to know roughly how many megawatts of EM radiation are pumped into the atmosphere by just cell towers and handsets? More out of curiosity than anything, or to see if anyone even really knows. I'm sure it is laughably tiny compared to how much the sun dumps on us each day, and is obviously spread out over a huge area.

The European Union has set a SAR limit of 2.0 W/kg and in the United States this limit is set at 1.6 W/kg
The in-utero effects of radiation exposure within this SAR limit on neurodevelopment remain unknown.
The phones were positioned above each cage over the feeding bottle area at a distance of 4.5–22.3 cm from each mouse, depending on the location of the animal within the cage
Thirty-three female mice were exposed throughout gestation (days 1–17) to radiation from muted and silenced 800–1900 Mhz cellular phones with a SAR of 1.6 W/kg.
...it is important to recognize that the extrapolation of this animal model to humans is limited; the exposures used here are not identical to those experienced by the human fetus.
two things to take from this:
1- don't let your pregnant mice have a cell phone
2- don't strap cell phones to pregnant human's stomach area

Is this going to be one of those threads where we all pretend like using cell phones cant possibly have any negative effects?

You don't have to be a chem-trailer to think that there could be long term issues in X of 1,000,000 heavy cell phone users.

I tend to agree, and I guarantee that if any hard science "smoking gun" evidence was produced, it would be squashed by telecom companies.

I am not a raving lunatic "all companies are evil" kind of person, but you are just delusional if you think any telecom company is going to choose less profits over less health risks.

Keep in mind that women typically keep their phone very close to them, i.e. in their purse, which rests next to their stomach when they're carrying it. Human pregnancy also lasts a lot longer than a mouse's and brains are much larger and a little more complex, so the potential for developmental interference is higher.

Considering that the brain's function is extremely electrical in nature, its worth looking at how EM affects it. Cell phones are just the tip of the iceberg - I'm more interested in how a pregnant woman with a wifi enabled laptop in front of her all day is going to affect the baby.

so, really, how many people are going to change their lifestyle over this? not that many
most will keep texting/facebooking regardless of the risk

the few who care enough to change their lifestyle are already living 'off the grid' on communes in Oregon/California

reminds me of that one Portlandia episode....

I don't think anybody should change their lifestyle. I think we just need to make the technology safer.

For starters, the area you put up to your ear should be shielded.

We should also heavily test the spectrum to see what small ranges are most damaging to us and just avoid those. Just as only a specific frequency will excite water molecules in a microwave oven, the same likely applies to organic tissue and neurons.

No one should change their lifestyle over this, but it does show an area we should probably investigate further.

Hmm, I don't know though. GHz range is non-ionizing radiation. The power of a handheld is also nowhere near the power of a microwave oven, so there is no problem with intensity either.

I would say there are little to no effects at all above the background of radiation we are normally subjected to. For instance, radiation from a sunny day easily surpasses all artificial sources of radiation.

Of course. Last time I opened a thread like this I was mocked, derided. Of course, there's no chance in fvcking hell all these radiowaves can have any impact on your health at all. Not a chance, don't worry!
