Cell phone towers...

Question: We own some land with a cell phone tower on it (not sure what company it is) located in northwest Illinois. It is farmland and they pay us $16k/year to have the tower there. The tower is the type that has supporting cables running out all around it.

How long do you think the company will keep the tower located there? I want to know if it will be longer than 4 years most likely which I'm assuming it will be.

they will keep it there. The government is cracking down on the cell companies and wont let them put up new towers without jumping through hoops, while on fire, driving a clown car while wearing a duck costume.

that's a pretty cool deal! I wonder if I can convince some company to put a cell tower on the roof of my apartment and pay me.

the local rule around here is that there has to be a fall radius twice the distance the tower is tall. Basically there cant be any buildings within that area. Try finding a place like that in a city. Most cell companies are using existing structures, church steeples, water towers, some even use ones that look like trees.

Its kind of cool actually....

The lease you signed with the company will tell you the minimum amount of time they will keep it there, or at least the minumum amount of time they will be giving you money.

haha like the simpsons.

Pics of these towers? Do you see em in cities? and how do cell phones get a signal in the city? Must be a really big tower😕

You should have a land lease that you signed with the company. Also town zoning/variance enforcement papers as well.

It'll be there indefinintely. In order to build a new one, or move it, it takes a lot of planning, both in permits and licences (the usual "red tape"), and technology-wise (integrating the tower with the existing network of towers). Therefore, they'd probably prefer to build it once and maintain it for as long as the technology is relevant. (And radio towers for mobile phones aren't going anywhere anytime soon.)

Are you looking for some excuse to get them to move? Rebuild using a different type of tower? (Good luck with that one.) Then read the contract. 😉

I hate red tape sometimes... one of the family farms was supposed to have a cell tower installed on it...
one day, they said all the plans were good to go, the next, the township disapproved the tower, meaning we couldn't have it on our land.

so they moved it about 3000 feet south, to a different township... our next door neighbor's farm..... ARG
