Cell Phone Service....

I am switching services, I currently have nextel and its HORRIBLE. I absolutly hate it. Customer service there sucks too.

I am located near salisbury, NC ---28146 Zip If anyone local has opinions.

I am thinking about going Verizon because with my work I can get a 15% discount on my monthly bills, and get the phones and stuff cheaper too. Anyone have any opinion on them?
--The Verizon plans have no roaming/long distance charges in the US right?

I have also been told cingular is good, but idk if they have coverage in my area?

Which would you choose? Any other companies that you have used/liked?

Thanks,
Josh

I liked ATT, but when they sold out to Cingular the customer service went to crap.
I liked the old, cheap, text-based M-mode. It was easy to get the latest headlines and weather.

Am using a Tracfone right now and I like it. Its a very good deal if you dont need to talk a lot.

History:
Started with ATT in June of 03. Got a Moto C333, probably THE WORST cell phone ever made. But I didnt know any better and it was free.
After one year I signed up again and got a Nokia 3300. Its the one that looks like the Ngage but is not a game phone.
I love it, a lot. I can use WAV, MP3, OGG and AAC as ringtones for individual callers and groups.
But after dealing with cingular for a few months it looks like I'm going to have to give it up.
Shame too, the full keyboard makes it real easy to text message and enter contacts.

If I go with anyone else it might be T-Mobile and the Motorola A630.

Try Verizon's coverage locator here:

It looks like they have excellent coverage where you live. You can "test drive" a phone/plan for ~12-14 days (I forget which exactly) to see if you like it. If coverage is horrible, you can return it in that time and not pay the ETF.

I'm VERY happy with Verizon, I've had Centennial and Alltel before (both were regional carriers and may not exist in your area). Coverage with Verizon is FAR superior to both.

Plus, if you have a bunch of family/friends with Verizon service, you can call them freely without it coming out of your package minutes. That's a huge plus for me, my friends from college are mostly Verizon customers and it's nice that our long conversations don't eat up my minutes.

As for Verizon phones right now, I'm hearing lots of good things about the Motorola E815. Go through Amazon.com for the best deal.

THANK you, i looked at the coverage map before, but i didnt know if it was like nextels, nextel shows GREAT coverage in my area, but i cant get a signal anywhere.

Do you get charged long distance, or have any roaming charges on your plan? Im looking at the 900 min. plan for $60 a month.

Josh

if its the america's choice plan there is no long distance. you can call anywhere with verizon service to any other national place and it will just be using your regular minutes.

I've been very happy with Sprint but I have no clue how they are in your area.

I've had sprint too for the past 2 years and I'm very happy, especially with their data plans and my new 2megapixel slider phone.

I love Verizon - great service and KILLER customer service. I used to wait an hour to get a CS rep when I used Sprint PCS; with Verizon I've never waited more than a minute with Verizon.

To answer your question, LD is free with Verizon, and there's no roaming charge as long as you are on a digital connection. They actually have leased access to the entire Sprint PCS network in addition to Verizon's own, at no charge. I honestly don't remember if there's a roaming charge on analog lines, but I'd think there would be one. Verizon works digitally just about everywhere I've been, other than North Pole, Alaska, so it hasn't mattered.

Ok, this is only partially true. They don't have leased access to the entire sprintpcs network, rather they roam on parts of it, and only in some regions. For instance, in San Diego it's impossible to roam onto sprint if you have verizon, they won't allow it in the PRL. In addition, I dunno when you called, but it's never taken me more than 3 minutes to speak to a customer service rep with Sprint. With Sprint, roaming includes Verizon's network along with some others (Alltell, US Cellular, etc) and analog roaming too (no additional charge). I also don't believe any of the carriers charge for LD, so that's not an issue. Just try before you buy, and see which one you like better (and don't get brainwashed by Verizon's "most reliable network" propaganda), remember it's a marketing scheme.

It should also be noted that recently Verizon wireless is imposing a $15 charge when you need customer service to change ESNs or do some CS-related things. You might wanna take that into account as well.
