I currently have a cell phone (Motorola StarTAC) with Verizon Wireless. I'm not happy with the service because there is no signal at my house. I have been given the chance to get out of my contract but I have to do it NOW. I've been trying to research possible alternatives.
I'm looking for service that will work in 3 specific locations. I need it to work at home in Darlington MD, at school in Baltimore MD, and at my uncle's house in Alexandria VA. The third one I doubt will be a problem for any provider as it is in a large city. The other two are a bit of a problem. I've learned not to trust the sales reps or the companies web sites because they are all wrong. From my testing I've found that Verizon works everywhere but home and Cingular works everywhere but school (which is surprising because a Cingular rep said there would be no service at my house ).
Right now I'm primarily debating between T-Mobile and AT&T Wireless (T-Mobile is winning every so slightly). Either way I plan to go with a Motorola V.60 phone . I have a few questions before I go out and sign up (I'm very suspicious because Verizon lied to me and screwed me multiple times).
I know most cell providers offer a window where you can return the phone and cancel the contract without having to pay that huge (~$200) cancellation fee. How long is that window with ATT and T-Mobile? What would I have to pay if I returned the phone (would I still have to pay the activation fee, etc.)? The reason I ask is because if I don't get a signal in any one of those places then I'm not keeping the phone (I'll just go back to Verizon because it's much cheaper for me).
Also, there seems to be a number of different Motorola V.60 phones. Is there any difference other than the network they use (CDMA, TDMA, GSM)? Amazon seems to have the V.60g for $0 after rebates (with T-Mobile service) which seems like a great deal. Is that the same exact phone as the V.60 offered by T-Mobile for $200? Is there any reason I should buy it from ATT or T-Mobile rather than Amazon which has the phones cheaper?
Also a quick credit question (hello RossMAN ). How likely will it be for them to approve me for a phone without needing to to give them some large amount of money up front? I've had a CC from Bank of America since May 01. I've never had a late payment (they're all early in fact), I always make large payments, and I use my CC a LOT. The only down side I see is I have only had it a short time (about 1.5 years).
