Cell Phone Recommendations

I'm completely new to whole cell phone thing. It's getting to the point where I need one now. Can anyone give some advice on what to get? Keep in mind that I don't really want to spend an arm and a leg on it. I was thinking Nokia something, but not sure what is good for sporadic, everyday use.

Not worried about a plan. I'm in Canada though, so if I got something from the States would it work if it was unlocked?

This christmas I got one of the three phones bell was offering in their holiday packs. The phone I got was a Kyocera 5135. Personally I love the phone and bells service is pretty good. I would suggest getting a phone from whatever company is going to provide you with your service, it could save you alot of hassle later on.
