cell phone question

my parents got me a cell phone for my bday, and put me on their alltel plan. the phone they got me was just the default freebie phone that comes with a new contract (nokia 3587i), and it sucks so i was looking at other phones. but alltel only has 9 phones available, so will any CDMA phone work with alltel's CDMA network? anyone have any info on how to do this or how difficult it would be?

for cdma networks, you're pretty much bound by what your particular carrier is selling (or has sold, in some cases). Few if any carriers will activate a phone that came from a rival company simply because the software may not be totally compatible, and because they of course want you to buy a phone from them. So like another poster said, check out howardforums, but if you do decide to get a phone from there make sure it's an alltel phone. It would be a good idea to call up alltel and inquire about this too - ask the seller for the phone's ESN (phone's unique id) and then when you call Alltell ask if they are able to switch your line to that ESN.
