Cell Phone Question

I have an Nokia phone and I use ATT/Cingular. I want to get a new phone but I'm not really liking any of the models available. There are some neat Samsung ones that I want but they say they're for T-Mobile. The rep. at the store said that the phone only needed to support GSM in order to work on the ATT network. I was wondering if I could just purchase one of these phones off the internet and pop in my SIM card and it'd work?

I get a really good discount through my mother's work, so I can deal with any issues I have for the price I'm paying a month. Also, AT&T is the only carrier that provides service when I'm at home vs at college.
