Cell phone problem (T-Mobile)

I recently switched from Cingular to T-Mobile and got a Sony Ericson K750i. The problem is, sometimes I get a voicemail alert with the phone never having rung. What's the deal? Why isn't the phone ringing? Also, sometimes I don't get text messages that poeple have sent.
 
You probably didn't have signal when the person tried to call you, so they were forwarded to your voicemail. I think the text message problem is the same thing, no signal.
