cell phone in boston

OK, since i am gong to have 2 roommates during college, my thinks it is best for me to get a cell phone so she does npt have to go through busy signals when calling me. I have Voicestream (T Mobile) and it has excellent coverage in Boston and Cambridge, but I think I might want to try a different company. Are there any carriers out their that has better reception in places such as the "T"? Mine just barely gets reception. Also, I went into my university bookstore and I have to admit, the recpetion drops to 2-3 bars in there.
