I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this in but I had a question about the Hands free devices in cars for cellphones during the 90s. I wanted to know how these systems integrated into the stereo and or speaker system. I know like on Lexus LS400 there was a control box in the back, an antenna hookup and a hookup in the car stereo so that when a call is accepted, it mutes the stereo and you can hear the user on the other end. But what about for aftermarket setups? Does anybody know of any particular models that did this like for a Nokia 6110 or an earlier classic phone. There was a base station that would continuously charge the phone but soon as you accepted the call, the call could be heard through the car speakers.

I can't speak for the Nokia 6110. But the 90's phones at least generally were not wireless. My dad a motorola I think installed in his cars. They had the communication box in the trunk, they would run the cord to the base and to the stereo (aux port in the back of the stereo) under the carpet and then over the headboard and out by the windshield the mic, usually near the visor.

The phone itself was very wired to the based. The cool trick on his was that it was portable with a giant battery. So you could pull off part of the truck setup plug in the phone and use it somewhere else. It was nice for him because this was setup in his Taurus SHO's (he went through 2) and a Lincoln Continental, but his main job was selling tools in a Matco truck so when he was working he had that big module setup in the truck.
